REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Nina Allen 4/25/2018 1:43 PMWomen in the US are still being paid less then men for doing the same job. Women in non-traditional roles in the workplace are still faced with prejudice and bias. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Nina Allen 4/25/2018 1:37 PMLawn care chemicals are very hard on the water systems. Plastic in the ocean is heart-breaking. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 2How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Nina Allen 4/25/2018 1:27 PMI am usually fairly conscious of how my food affects the planet. I drink shade-grown, fair-trade coffee. I avoid palm oil and bottled water. I try to always buy locally-sourced veggies and meats. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Buy BambooAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Nina Allen 4/25/2018 1:23 PMAside from bamboo flooring, the only bamboo I found was in cooking utensils. I've been reading a bit about hemp fiber. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Nina Allen 4/25/2018 1:21 PMAmericans, generally have enough money to splurge on meat. If more people truly understood the inhumane conditions at commercial animal farms and the horrific slaughtering processes, I think we would think before eating meat and make better, sustainable choices.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of this?
Nina Allen 4/25/2018 12:45 PMIf one needs to loss weight, eating smaller portions will definitely help. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Nina Allen 4/17/2018 9:50 AMI want one on my house! The Columbia Gorge creates a fine wind tunnel. Perhaps we could think about adding micro turbines to new construction going forward?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Nina Allen 4/09/2018 9:19 AMCommunity gardens and small farm animals (chickens and goats, maybe?) Tool libraries, maybe some bartering? Wouldn't it be great if we could have crèche-type day care where everyone contributes to the costs and/or volunteers?
We would need to get out of the isolated, big city, don't know your neighbors and more into a "village" mind-set. How do we get people to do the thing that is best for all? Not just the easy thing or the thing that works best for the individual?
