    Buildings and Cities
How could better walking infrastructure make your city both more enjoyable and more equitable?

Asheville has some of the most dangerous road crossings in all of North Carolina. This, combined with our poor public transit system increases the burden on citizens who can't otherwise go work. In addition to that, pedestrian safety laws are not systematically enforced in Asheville, even in places like downtown that is pedestrian friendly - being in a crosswalk in Asheville does not guarantee that cars will stop. There have been several pedestrians killed who were walking on sidewalks in the past few years as well, including 3 children just last year - this is tragic. We need more sidewalks, and we need to change the culture surrounding both cyclists and pedestrians.

How can you make your home more energy efficient?

I will add insulation into the infrastructure of my house. We found out soon after we bought our house that there was very little insulation. This means that in the winter time, several rooms in my house requires much more heat which increases my impact on the environment.

Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next?

I would love to add insulation to my house to increase energy efficiency. It is cost prohibitive to do right now, but I plan on saving money to do this within the year.

    Food
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

The accessibility and affordability of cheap (& low-quality) meat in America dramatically impacts how much meat we consume. I don't think it says so much about our values as it does about the real problem of very poor people not feeling like they have a choice in the food that they consume. The meat industry is a strong lobby and does a lot to promote this lifestyle. I think that if more people understood the mistreatment of animals in these industrial factory farms and the impact that they have on the environment, then they would feel less inclined to go for the easy option.
