How do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?

After taking a global climate change class at PCC I really do believe in climate change and that it's happening. It's unfortunate to see many people say that it isn't real, including our president. I worry that it may be to late to totally correct what's already started. However I think we need to make an effort to be more considerate of our planet.

Women and Girls Support Women-Owned Businesses
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women?

I think by supporting women in our communities who run businesses it will hopefully encourage more men and women to give back to our communities.  While helping recognize women more in the work place.

I found that breakfast or lunch was the best meal to choose to have meatless. I personally enjoy eating fish and some meat products. As of lately though I have been interested in learning more about vegetarian choices. I enjoyed having this incorporated into what I was already curious about.

With the nice weather upon us I found myself in the need for patio furniture.  I had been looking around at alot of places- I either wanted to buy something used or something new that was more environmentally friendly. I found a great used tables made of bamboo and two chairs that are wicker- better than plastic I hope. I have really appreciated this challenge as it make me more conscious of my purchases.

How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

I did not realize how much palm oil is in products I use. And all the different names it can hide behind. I didn't realize palm oil was used in soap, conditioner, detergent, even lipstick! The list goes on even more after this. It makes me not want to buy products at the store ever again and make everything myself at home. Or try to support people in the community who make things and don't include palm oil.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    jackie boliba's avatar
    jackie boliba 4/14/2018 1:30 PM
I already recycle as much as I can and I work at a restaurant that recycles everything from plastic bags, to the lids you can't put in our recycle and we just started going strawless as well. I try not buy things if I don't need them or serve a purpose. I could get better at trying to repair goods instead of just replacing them, however that's not always possible- because a lot of things are made to break down! I know there are more ways I can include the R's and I will continue to try.

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

In Oregon we have a great water supply and the water tastes amazing here. We have various water sheds that help supply water to our community. I think that we could be more aware of out water consumption habits because were so used to having water here. So adding low flow attachments I think is a great thing we can do on a personal level and it will help your water bill!

I have already installed low flow faucet attachments around my house in addition to the shower head. There is also a free way to get these along with energy efficient lights, its through the energy trust of Oregon website, you can fill out the application and then you get a box of free light bulbs and low flow attachments. Ive done it at both my homes in Portland and it's super awesome!

Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

I have found that there are various bamboo products from kitchen wear to floor mats. I also just bought bamboo sticks that have been dried to use in my garden for the beans I will be growing. I could have plastic or metal but bamboo is more environmentally friendly.

You are on a roll, Jackie.  Good job!  One bamboo product that I really love is my set of silverware that I actually won at a NWEI EcoChallenge celebration.  They were able to order these with their logo from To-Go Ware, but you can find similar sets at natural food stores.  I added in the stainless steel straw.  These have allowed me to avoid a lot of single-use plastic silverware and straws.

What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

I already try to have one meal with out meat each day at the least. I am currently trying to eat less red and white meat and move towards a more plant based with some seafood diet.
