REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHad you heard of the term silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Madeline Coyle 4/25/2018 7:47 AMI have not heard about silvopasture before, but now I am all for it. I think that the biggest advantage is the reduced carbon emissions. It is a natural way to solve a problem. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodNow that you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, how will you view expiration dates differently?
Madeline Coyle 4/25/2018 7:43 AMI can use certain foods even after their quality is at it's peak. If everyone does this, then food waste can decrease a whole lot -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Madeline Coyle 4/25/2018 7:38 AMI would rather have that money go towards research for climate change or healthcare, specifically genetic disorders or cancer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Madeline Coyle 4/25/2018 7:31 AMMost people have been growing up with families that eat meat, which will most likely lead to them eating meat. Most restaurants also serve mostly meals centered around a meat. If vegetarian options are more normalized, then more people will eat more meatless meals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Madeline Coyle 4/25/2018 7:28 AMYou can use vegetable leftovers to make broth and it will make the broth more rich. You can also feed things like stems or skins to pets that can eat that kind of thing. You can also make a compost area to put those in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of this?
Madeline Coyle 4/25/2018 7:26 AMDishing out smaller portions can reduce wasted food and can keep people more healthy. Overeating is not good for people, so this can reduce that. -
Madeline Coyle 4/25/2018 7:21 AMAfter making breakfast and lunch, I had no waste and kept it meat and dairy- free! I kept my cilantro stems to use for making broth which is what I do with leftover vegetables.
