REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Laura Darnell 4/24/2018 11:11 AMI enjoyed spending time researching the best growing seasons/practices for my home garden with the hopes of generating more of our own produce. I learned about why my purple hill country okra plants are doing much better in our climate than some commercially produced non-native varieties we planted. -
Laura Darnell 4/19/2018 1:12 PMReally enjoying the challenge, and finding that it stays in the back of my mind as I move about my days. Yesterday at the store I remembered to buy bamboo coffee filters and remembered to use my own bags for both produce and general groceries. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next?
Laura Darnell 4/10/2018 12:55 PMNext I can complete an energy inventory for my house to see what other small changes I can make. I can also be extra vigilant about turning lights out as I change rooms or leave the house, and keep my thermostat at a conservative level. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Laura Darnell 4/10/2018 11:36 AMI drink coffee each day, and often enjoy chocolate. I can check the labels and buy coffee and chocolates that say, "shade grown." -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodProducing uneaten food squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these motivates you the most to change your behavior regarding food waste?
Laura Darnell 4/10/2018 11:33 AMCreating compost is so gratifying because I can visually see the value as my garden grows healthy and abundant with the added nutrients. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of this?
Laura Darnell 4/10/2018 11:31 AMReducing my portion size not only minimizes waste, but also contributes to my health. Taking only the calories I need makes me feel better and more refreshed right after eating, versus sluggish and tired from overeating. -
