Here is a great article on Biomass energy. I had heard for years that ethanol isn’t an efficient fuel due to the resources/energy needed just to produce it but appreciated a broader spectrum of information about the pros and cons of Biomass in general.

Had you ever heard of biomass techonology before this? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!

Yes, I have heard of biomass technology before. I actually contemplated installing a corn furnace in my old house. One thing that I learned in my recent research is that biomass tends to be CO2 neutral because it is burning CO2 captured while growing which came straight out of the environment. Unlike fossil fuels which have stored CO2 that would be added to the environment when burned.

I couldn't find much information about how/where to recycle bio-plastics locally but I found some great articles that explain some of the issues. One of the main points is that without proper recycling, bio-plastics don't fulfill the promise of being sustainable and they are often recycled with regular PET plastic which can cause issues when reusing that recycled plastic. You also need to know that compostable plastic is a different version of bio-plastic that will breakdown in a standard large scale compost environment but not all bio-plastics do this.

Remember those super crinkly biodegrable SunChip bags?  I still have evidence of one in my compost bin.  This is going to take a while...

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Windy Fleischaker's avatar
    Windy Fleischaker 4/18/2018 5:30 AM
What concerns me most about how we are affecting the planet is that is may be irreversible and that people aren't concerned enough and choose ease & low cost over what is better for humanity and the environment.

Just realized that the "reflection questions" post here, do they count as a daily check in?

I'm not sure if they count as a check in, but they count for 10 points each! I realized the question doesn't appear with your post, so i tend to vaguely echo the question in my post (or it sounds like you're talking to yourself).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Windy Fleischaker's avatar
    Windy Fleischaker 4/06/2018 8:48 AM
I've stopped using straws while out and about and have reusable straws at home. I typically refuse plastic bags at stores.

    Windy Fleischaker's avatar
    Windy Fleischaker 4/06/2018 8:46 AM
All of the above but mainly time and convenience. Environmental impact is also a big factor.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Windy Fleischaker's avatar
    Windy Fleischaker 4/06/2018 8:45 AM
Not really, I grew up in the South and never contemplate public transit until I moved to MN and only started really using it in the last 7 years.
