REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Mackenzie Flowe 4/25/2018 6:20 AMI think on top of the great smokey mountains national park could just have a couple, so it doesn't ruin the beauty, but could be very beneificial. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. What kind of investment seems most feasible for you?
Mackenzie Flowe 4/25/2018 6:18 AMI think that in Asheville most houses should be geothermal, or any new house that is built here will be geothermal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?
Mackenzie Flowe 4/25/2018 6:14 AMTidal energy or tidal power can be defined as the energy that is the result of the moon and the sun’s gravitational influence on the ocean. Height differences between high and low tides create tidal currents in coastal areas, and these currents can be strong enough to drive turbines. This surprised me because it could power 10% of all of the worlds energy needs, and that's impressive. -
Mackenzie Flowe 4/25/2018 6:08 AMIt really makes me happy, and proud of our school coming together to really learn more about the environment and really have the drive to learn at the same time!! So pumped! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsHow do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?
Mackenzie Flowe 4/25/2018 6:00 AMHousehold refrigerators and freezers manufactured before 1995 typically contain chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerant. Many window air-conditioning units and dehumidifiers contain hydro chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant. CFCs and HCFCs are ozone-depleting substances that, if released to the environment, destroy the ozone layer. This is very scary, because so many of our things, like our fridges are contributing negatively to our environment, it makes me think what else is. I address these feelings to myself by making myself research more things about my home. I know that it might be tedious now, but it worth it if I can help the earth even just a little. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Mackenzie Flowe 4/25/2018 5:52 AMWell if we give the women more money, and support their businesses then they can have even more money after expenses to invest in their companies, or have fun! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Mackenzie Flowe 4/24/2018 10:20 AMMy consumption of meat is negatively affecting deforestation by making forests be cut down for spaces for cattle to graze and be slaughtered. I can defiantly eat less meat and that will slowly start to have to use less spaces for cattle, which means more space for forests. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Mackenzie Flowe 4/24/2018 9:57 AMI have a friend who lives close to me and we always go to sporting events together, I will talk to her about carpooling instead of meeting up places! WE would also use her car which gets better gas mileage! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Mackenzie Flowe 4/24/2018 9:27 AMI think that since we live in a really developed country and can afford meat we feel like we have to eat as much meat as possible. I think if we start having less livestock and companies started making money with growing plants instead! -
Mackenzie Flowe 4/24/2018 9:19 AMYesterday, I went to get my eyebrows done, and this business is all run locally, but is run by a single women with a lot of will and talent. Not only do my eyebrows now look great, but I supported a local business run by a strong woman! Women are the future!
