Leone Gholston 4/25/2018 7:16 AMIt sure can be tough to break habits like getting a lid on coffee cups, straws in drinks - but when you think of it adding up, it sounds ridiculous that these practices were ever the norm! It is too easy to hid your head in the sand and I hope we can find more sustainable ways for our most wasteful practices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Leone Gholston 4/23/2018 10:30 AMI use exclusively reusable grocery bags. I TRY to remember my own reusable coffee mug when getting a coffee treat. I don't know what I can do about to-go containers, other than refuse until they change their packaging, which is hard to do when you smell that food cart... I am on the lookout for a stainless straw also. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Leone Gholston 4/23/2018 10:26 AMPromotion and availability of fresh produce is vital, especially in low-income regions where higher fat/lower nutritious food is typically available. Community gardens help too! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Leone Gholston 4/19/2018 7:05 AMI am fortunate that my region has plenty of water - but I have considered the gutter water collectors to water my yard... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Leone Gholston 4/19/2018 7:03 AMBamboo is readily available - but other options include reclaimed wood from old buildings/barns, using a re-store for home projects, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodProducing uneaten food squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these motivates you the most to change your behavior regarding food waste?
Leone Gholston 4/19/2018 7:02 AMI hate wasting food but even worse is sending it to a landfill when I do - so composting at least re-uses some nutrients and minerals. Of course, not wasting food is still the goal! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Leone Gholston 4/19/2018 7:00 AMActually got my utility report yesterday. I have chosen the Green Source option and pay a bit more for 100% renewable energy - 74% wind, 21 solar, 3 biomass, 1 low-impact hydro and 1% geothermal. They say I avoided more than 6254 pounds of CO2 from entering the air. whoot! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesHow does improving your home's energy efficiency help you better live out your values?
Leone Gholston 4/19/2018 6:56 AMMinimizing electrical & gas waste is important! Yes, we need SOME, but not to waste it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next?
Leone Gholston 4/19/2018 6:55 AMrechargeable batteries maybe? Tho have had poor results in the past... -
Leone Gholston 4/12/2018 7:40 AMI was unable to meet my vegan meal goal due to my coworker pushing fish tacos...there is always today!
