The Circle School Possums 4/25/2018 9:02 PMThis is it- my last post. I am committed to contacting my elected officials on the regular. Committed to eating smarter as far as waste goes. No more disposable straws! When I go shopping, I now have a list of foods I will seek out and coffee producers- we drink a lot of coffee- that operates in line with a sustainable future. I look forward to doing this again next year and THANK YOU CIRCLE SCHOOL for the inspiration and support. We rock! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
The Circle School Possums 4/25/2018 4:56 PMI am going to cheat on answering what my sustainable community looks like: Today, driving home from work, I saw TWO people throw bags of trash out of their window onto the highway. HOW are we to have sustainable communities when we cannot even get people to throw trash in a trash can? We need education and peer pressure from an early age promoting sustainable practices and giving people facts about the damage we are doing to our living spaces. We need a complete shift in our view of the environment as Americans before any sort of sustainable community can become a reality. Adults make me lose hope; Kids give me back that hope. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
The Circle School Possums 4/25/2018 11:43 AMBamboo alternatives are available and being promoted by local nurseries and by the Urban Program for Bexar County. These organizations also have a lot of information online explaining the sustainability of and/or defending the villianization of "Damn-boo"! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
The Circle School Possums 4/25/2018 11:39 AMWe had a visitor from the local water authority who shared with us all the things we as humans do that negatively affect our water supply, from driving to littering to taking care of our personal gardens to washing our cars. It was pretty sobering to realize how aware we need to be so that we do not have a negative effect on our water. This link has 6 easy ways we can all work to keep our water systems clean. https://www.nrdc.org/stories/6-ways-you-can-help-keep-our-water-clean -
The Circle School Possums 4/25/2018 11:34 AMStar Room Kindergarten read a book today about an artist and when the book mentioned how the artist helped clean up his neighborhood, the class got really excited because he was being an "eco-warrior". Then when he painted a mural in his neighborhood, there was a little disappointment that the mural was not about being an "eco-warrior." The five and six year olds have enjoyed this Eco-challenge and are ready to changed the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
The Circle School Possums 4/25/2018 8:28 AMBarriers that exist to women's equal participation in my community? Is an answer other than "men" needed? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? Share some of the learning with your friends!
The Circle School Possums 4/25/2018 5:26 AMThe World Health Organization's website has links and lots of in-depth information about the need for and lack of family planning globally. Locally, the cutting of funds and demonization of Planned Parenthood has directly affected the family planning abilities of many communities in Texas and across the country. Voting for representatives who support organizations such as Planned Parenthood (WRRAP, NARAL, and the Center for Reproductive Rights, among others) and helping fund these programs will help with family planning in this country. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHigher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?
The Circle School Possums 4/25/2018 5:18 AMThe biggest way my lifestyle impacts the environment elsewhere is through transportation, which is a primary one for most people/communities. I try to take the bus whenever possible on weekends and days off, but I still use my car for work even though it is not necessary that I do. I have contacted officials about public transportation between here and Austin, as I think a rail system similar to one's I have experienced in California would be beneficial to South Texas for many reasons. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodProducing uneaten food squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these motivates you the most to change your behavior regarding food waste?
The Circle School Possums 4/24/2018 6:11 PMIf I had to pick that motivated me the most to change my food waste behavior, it would energy. Considering all that an overuse of energy effects- from manpower to raw materials to pollution- that is the area that motivates me the most.
