REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesHow could better walking infrastructure make your city both more enjoyable and more equitable?
Kate Jaceldo 4/17/2018 4:31 AMMany people relying on the bus system have to walk along areas without sidewalks or walking paths, so many people don’t do it. A more walkable infrastructure would promote use of mass transit over cars, it would increase Community connections, and would reduce greenhouse gas emissions making the atmosphere healthier. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Kate Jaceldo 4/17/2018 4:30 AMThe use of solar and living roofs are two of the ideas I love the most, but especially living roofs. Bringing access to fresh locally grown foods to the inner-city where there is often a food dessert. Detroit has some of the best programs to that end in the country. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Kate Jaceldo 4/16/2018 5:39 AMI envision San Antonio expanding solar as far as it can go, increasing walkability by focusing on keeping neighborhood amenities close. Composting by every household and restaurant with the food waste staying hyper local to be used to make us as food secure as possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Kate Jaceldo 4/16/2018 5:36 AMOur local grocery store carries bamboo toothbrushes. You can find bamboo cutlery, plates, and other assorted stuff you would typically find in plastic. Paper plates that compost easily are also a good alternative over plastic or styrofoam. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Kate Jaceldo 4/13/2018 5:51 AMI can start turning old clothes into cleaning rags, and taking my own produce bags to the store. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Kate Jaceldo 4/13/2018 5:50 AMBuying from women owned businesses, mentoring girls and showing them all of their options for work and education. Collaborate with other female professionals so that our voices are heard at the table. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsHow can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?
Kate Jaceldo 4/11/2018 11:55 AMI am part of the city’s climate ready planning group, a local group aiming to reduce plastic use in the community, and a group trying to promote agricultural initiatives in the city to help us become more food secure -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Kate Jaceldo 4/11/2018 11:53 AMI would rather spend the money on higher quality more locally grown foods that I actually eat. -
Kate Jaceldo 4/10/2018 6:17 PMI love how the challenge makes me think about every day actions and look into topics I never would have.-
The Circle School Possums 4/10/2018 6:33 PMRachel and I have noticed that this challenge is turning the Star Roomers into a bunch of Eco Thugs; and the Song Room, as we challenged them specifically to complete some of these tasks. Imagine the amazing change we could make if city, state, and our federal govt back challenges like these on a larger scale. This has been a blast AND I really feel like change is being made.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Kate Jaceldo 4/10/2018 6:16 PMToday I walked to get dinner at a local restaurant and I chatted with 2 neighbors and noticed one beautiful flower I’ve never seen and intend to go back and investigate.
