REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Victoria Hallas 4/23/2018 4:59 AMI think that it is cheap to consume meat in the U.S., which leads people to make it a large part of their diet. We mass produce livestock in cheap (and sometimes inhumane) ways, which allows us to then sell meat at a cheaper cost. Other countries around the world do not mass produce meat in the same way and therefore, meat can be seen as a luxury rather than a staple to one's diet. I think we all need to reevaluate what a plant based diet means and learn to find alternatives to meat. You don't just need to eat kale and tofu anymore to be plant based. There are lots of healthy, delicious, and sustainable alternatives to meat consumption that more and more supermarkets and restaurants are starting to provide. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Victoria Hallas 4/17/2018 7:46 AMMy consumption of coffee and chocolate have really got me thinking on how I can be more aware of where my food is coming from and how it is impacting the environment. Luckily companies like Whole Foods where I do most of my grocery shopping provide brands that are eco-friendly and those are the brands I need to gravitate to more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of this?
Victoria Hallas 4/17/2018 4:39 AMBuying fresh produce more often instead of once a week has helped reduce the amount of fruits and vegetables I throw out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Online Energy AuditWhat are your next steps for saving energy?
Victoria Hallas 4/16/2018 5:23 AMI found out I use about 18% more energy in my apartment than I need to! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?
Victoria Hallas 4/16/2018 5:12 AMI learned that wave and tidal energy is still in the early stages of development, behind solar and wind. There are many different environmental factors that make this type of energy production challenging.
