REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Lydia Hanssen 4/25/2018 11:08 PMWe have been making weekly trips to Fred Meyer to recycle/deposit all our bottles and other items that they will take. We have also made strides in reusing or repurposing materials. Mason jars are really lifesavers. I bought them some time back for canning, but they have since served a variety of functions and are easy to clean. Some old cardboard boxes we have even make an excellent cat castle after a little bit of cutting and repositioning. Old toilet paper or paper towel rolls can even keep my cat entertained for a bit. There are so many different uses for things we commonly think of as disposable, and so many things we can refrain from purchasing altogether. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Lydia Hanssen 4/24/2018 12:20 PMLearning about smart glass was fascinating. I didn't know much about it before, so I was really intrigued by the whole concept of making our homes smarter in general to help the environment. It seemed kind of counterintuitive at first, but I can see how it can be helpful. I read how smart glass relies on chromism, which means the color reacts to change in light exposure, from clear to opaque. The drawdown implementation could lead to a potential of 2.19 gigatons of carbon dioxide reduction by 2050. Of course, this technology is challenged by its high introductory costs. Yet, it should become more accessible as time goes on and it keeps yielding benefits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Lydia Hanssen 4/15/2018 3:38 PMChanging my diet hasn't been too difficult, since I know it is for a worthwhile cause. Plus, I have already eliminated many things from my diet that contribute to deforestation and excess emissions. Beef has been stricken from my life for quite some time now, even my pets get their protein from other sources. Palm oil is another item that I have not consumed in quite some time. I planted some organic veggies on my balcony at the beginning of the term, which should be ready in the coming months. The most challenging part of this for me has been only going to sustainable restaurants/cafes. Typically, I do all my personal shopping as local/organic/free range, but when I go out to eat I don't always check. However, this daily challenge has encouraged me to only make purchases at places that are working towards a sustainable future. It is well worth it!
