REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsHow are people responding to the statistics you're sharing on social media?
James Henderson 4/25/2018 8:36 PMMost people didn't respond, although 2 people commented things along the lines of "why do you think that is?" or "does it happen in the US?". -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? Share some of the learning with your friends!
James Henderson 4/25/2018 8:35 PMUunmet needs are especially high for adolescents, migrants, slum dwellers, refugees, and women in the postpartum (according to the WHO). I learned that, although it would be expensive (around 3.6 billion USD) to meet all unmet needs in developing countries, it would be cheaper than the alternative, which is many more children and many more suffering women. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women?
James Henderson 4/25/2018 8:33 PMBy investing in women's companies, the women who are employed by and run the company will invest that money into their communities, and support communities as a result. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
James Henderson 4/25/2018 8:32 PMMy current diet negatively impacts deforestation because it involves eating bananas that aren't always rainforest alliance certified. I can change that by making sure my tropical fruits have a rainforest alliance logo on them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
James Henderson 4/25/2018 8:30 PMIt was easy to change my diet. I don't eat that many processed foods to begin with, and it was easy to find rainforest alliance certified chocolate and tea. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
James Henderson 4/25/2018 8:29 PMForests offer me clean air to breath, and they have a role in temperature regulation. They are also the source for the antibiotics I needed when I got an ear infection, and the paper I write on everyday at school. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodNow that you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, how will you view expiration dates differently?
James Henderson 4/25/2018 8:28 PMI won't immediately throw something away if it says "sell by" or "best by" -- I'll give it a shot. I'm also going to do further research on the expiration dates of products like sunscreen and drugs; perhaps some of those can be taken with a grain of salt as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
James Henderson 4/25/2018 8:25 PMHerb stems can be used to make broths or very finely chopped to use in sauces. Citrus peels can be made into zest. Radish and onion greens can be added into salads. If you have too many herbs, you can preserve them by adding either an acid (lemon juice) or a fat (olive oil). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
James Henderson 4/23/2018 9:35 AMOn top of business and apartment buildings in the city, as there are many high rises and our city is nicknamed the "Windy City" due to its wind and proximity to the lake. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
James Henderson 4/23/2018 9:19 AMA sustainable community looks to me like an environment with people in it that respect the intrinsic value of nature and work together to lessen their impact on the environment. It's also a healthy and happy community that lives in compassion and care for each other.
That vision is a bit too utopic, so I don't think that it could become a reality.
