I did just run a search for "shade" on another local coffee shop's website and the description of one of their coffees indicates it is "bird and eco-friendly. The plantation employs a medium density shade strategy, using two types of shade trees." Perhaps I'll try this new coffee option, although they do not offer the ability to purchase in my own bag. Again, pros and cons...

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Krystina Jarvis 4/25/2018 11:40 AMI just read the "4 Foods That Are Eating the World's Forests" article as part of the Land Use challenge, and was so sad to see that coffee is #2. I can't get through the day without my 2-3 cups! I purchase coffee in my own bag from a local coffee roaster, so I do get my coffee plastic free, local, and certified organic, but unfortunately their website does not mention shade-grown or Rainforest Alliance Certified. When making choices for our earth, I know that there are unfortunately always pros and cons. We do not live in a perfect society.
Krystina Jarvis 4/09/2018 5:38 PMI made dinner tonight and tried to make it zero waste, and I composted/saved for making veggie stock later all of the waste pieces, but does anyone have any suggestions for what to do with cilantro stems? They're such a unique flavor I don't want to put them in my veggie stock. And do avocado pits and skins count as waste? What about garlic peels (although those go in the stock)? I don't know the rules! 😆-

Karen Downing 4/09/2018 8:07 PMMaybe a local farmer can use it for the animals, either in the food (hogs/rabbits) or as enrichment? -
Bev Larson 4/09/2018 7:11 PMIf something isn't edible it isn't waste, in my opinion. Try growing avocado from the pit and compost the rest.

Krystina Jarvis 4/05/2018 10:32 AMEating meatless meals is so much less difficult than I once thought. Once you're looking at options other than meat as your main meal item, there are so many more flavors and varieties available!-

Krystina Jarvis 4/04/2018 5:00 PMFood waste day 1: nothing! Leading up to this challenge I've been thinking about food waste a lot, so hopefully this will be one of the easier tasks during the challenge. -
Krystina Jarvis 3/30/2018 1:55 PMOnly a few more days before the Drawdown Challenge begins! Even now, just from choosing my actions I'm so much more aware of my food waste. I can't wait to see the impact this challenge has on my eco footprint.-
