Keep Track of Wasted Food

#3 Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

Yes, I threw out food that rotted before I ate it. I kept forgetting what I had. I put a list of my food on the side of the refrigerator, oldest first -- and i focus on evaluating and consuming them before they spoil. Freezing stuff helps, too -- like spinach leaves for smoothies go into freezer boxes, so I can buy the huge clamshell size (lower price) and use it all, raw salad or smoothie or cooked.

Got wise about Mother Earth in 1986 when we moved into the first of three homes with SEPTIC tanks (and it was clogged) AND we found out about Shaklee eco-safe cleaning and laundry products. No more septics in my life, but the commitment to Shaklee and to treading gently on the planet still endure!
