To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Generation
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?

From Renewable Northwest: "The United States receives 2,100 terawatt-hours of incident wave energy along its coastlines each year, and tapping just one quarter of this potential could produce as much energy as the entire U.S. hydropower system."
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Generation
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Tom Klein 4/16/2018 12:53 PM
Micro wind turbines can be installed on homes, buildings and public facilities to off-set all or a portion of on-site energy consumption. It can also be integrated with photovoltaic and gen-set to stabilize the power output from various sources.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Generation
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. What kind of investment seems most feasible for you?

Scale-up of geothermal energy will require  private sector investments facilitated by risk mitigation mechanisms that include using concessional funding from public resources.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Now that you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, how will you view expiration dates differently?

    Tom Klein's avatar
    Tom Klein 4/04/2018 7:17 AM
The dates solely indicate freshness, and are used by manufacturers to convey when the product is at its peak. That means the food does not expire in the sense of becoming inedible. For un-refrigerated foods, there may be no difference in taste or quality, and expired foods won't necessarily make people sick.
