REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Jessica Lynn 4/25/2018 8:54 AMTo incorporate all parts of a vegetable into your meal, you can put the actual vegetable into the main dish and make a side salad for the remaining greens or stalks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Jessica Lynn 4/25/2018 8:53 AMTo start shifting a meat-focused food culture in America, we should expose the rampant malpractice in the food processing and animal slaughtering industry and highlight to people why it is a bad idea, so more people will become vegetarian, and also highlight the environmental impacts so that more people will at least want to limit their meat intake. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these advantages inspire you the most?
Jessica Lynn 4/24/2018 8:39 AMIt inspires me to support local farmers because not only is local food fresher, but it protects the environment and makes our community more sustainable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodNow that you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, how will you view expiration dates differently?
Jessica Lynn 4/23/2018 1:55 PMI will take use by dates with a grain of salt and continue to use the products if there is still a little left after the best by date passes to reduce my food waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Jessica Lynn 4/23/2018 1:52 PMI would rather use the money spent on wasted food every year to save up for college. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Jessica Lynn 4/23/2018 1:51 PMWe can research women-owned businesses in our community and before we buy from a company, we can research the ownership and see if a woman-owned business is selling the same product. -
Jessica Lynn 4/22/2018 4:00 PMI joined the challenge because I wanted to learn about what I could do to help the world, and also to be challenged to apply these prompts and really take action.
