The only food I remember throwing out is the lunch/dinner my son fiddles and sprinkles on the floor before he puts it in his mouth.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood compostingProducing uneaten food squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these motivates you the most to change your behavior regarding food waste?
ashritha nookala 4/17/2018 12:46 PMI make tea(loose leaf) every morning and use the left over for compost. I use egg shells, banana peels, orange peels, all unusable vegetable waste for compost everyday. I plan to use this for the veggie garden I will be growing this year. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
ashritha nookala 4/17/2018 12:43 PM
My family always eats most fruits(except for bananas and melons) and vegetables unpeeled. Also, we started using potatoes and sweet potatoes with skins, which makes them tastier and nutritious. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Support Local Food SystemsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these advantages inspire you the most?
ashritha nookala 4/17/2018 12:37 PMI bought vegetables and fruits from Atlanta farmer's market held in downtown Atlanta that shall be used for the rest of this week. I always buy honey and bee pollen made from local orchards.-
Manda Magee 4/18/2018 8:13 AMI wish I was in Atlanta right now for this challenge. We only had carrots and parsnips from last year at our farmers market. I still bought them :)
