The cost of making a home more sustainable by appliances is very much outside of my budget, and I'm sure outside of many others. to compensate for my inability to buy a low flow shower head, I have decreased my shower time to within 5 minutes and while doing things like letting my conditioner soak or shaving, I turn the water off.

As a way to reduce some of my food waste, I have taken to starting a vegetable garden this year. I have sprouted beans, cucumbers, cantalope, watermelon, jalapenos and bell peppers. As a natural pesticide, I have also sprouted some flowers that are great at deterring beetles and other bugs like like to maunch on these plants.

Since I do a lot of gardening and see growing, I am finding that many of the things I throw away can be used as seed carriers, storage, germination starters, etc. Many of the plastic containers, soda cans, bottles, milk jugs I have been reusing and recycling in my home as to reduce the waste that is produced.

While keeping note of my food waste and other waste it makes me more aware of what I am using and buying. With all fruit, my only waste are the cores and peels, but those are able to be composted. My trash comes from packaged foods in plastic. While looking into low flow shower heads  found that they were quite a bit more expensive than I had thought. I am going to start trying to put a little money aside and save up for one.

    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

1500$ of food waste money would be better spent investing in more sustainable energy solutions, or more ironically, in building a garden of your own.

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

Growing up in a drought prone state, I was, and continue to be, very aware of water usage. A sustainable water future would look like less anxiety surrounding water usage and confidence in daily routines. Despite the growing threat of limited water, various types of people still waste water in worthless fountains, recreation, and pleasure. Water needs to be seen as something not so expendable.
