We have an English pub about 5 blocks from our place on the UES, Jones Wood Foundry, that I have frequented over the years for typical english fare, your bangers and mash, your fish and chips, your lamb and rosemary pie, to name a few.  With an english friend in town, it seemed a great choice for them.  The good news for me was that they have recently launched a Vegan menu, giving me plenty more options than I would typically have.  Vegan shepherds pie narrowly defeated the cauliflower steak in my reckoning.  I don't know how they did it, but somehow they crafted a bunch of lentils to imitate pretty well the virtues of a true shepherds pie.  Highly recommended!

"mmmm I love that we are trying being vegetarian, its forcing us to be more creative with our cooking" exclaimed Mim with a satisfied grin Sunday evening.  We had just successfully baked our first eggplant cheesecake and were about to tuck into a couple of bowls of tagliatelle with walnut and lemon. This was gourmet vego dining and it was happening in out little kitchen on UES, wholesome flavors and smells filling our small apartment.  She was right, we were taking a more planned approach to our meals, and vegetarian or not, that has to be a better way of being, conscious of what we are putting into our bodies.  We have plenty more recipes to try.  We have a good library of cookbooks by Yottam Ottolenghi.  We used to live a couple of blocks from his Islington eatery and would frequent there often.  His book "Plenty More" is the source of last nights culinary creations and there is a looong list of dishes to try.  It will certainly keep us busy and inspired during the meatless challenge.  Just looking at the cover makes you want to eat this food forever.....

So first day of the meatless challenge and I happen to be attending a concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn (it was Lorde in case you are wondering, no it wasn't my choice, but yes I was glad I went, she was actually pretty good).  Within the first 24 hours then I was faced with the prospect of finding sustenance where the choices ranged from pizza to burgers to hot dogs.  After carefully surveying all of the vendors, I settled on margarita pizza, fries and pretzel. My poor suffering wife, while not signed up to this challenge, joined in this meatless extravaganza.  I had thought that Brooklyn might present a few more vego options, what with its hipster vibe and all, but I guess the masses rule the roost at a venue like that.  I'm hoping for more options when eating out in NYC in the next 3 weeks and getting a bit more of that #plantbaseddiet going on or ill soon be made entirely of bread or potato. I'm optimistic that will be the case, NYC is pretty good at catering for everyone.

Thanks Narada, I should definitely have done my research ahead of time and that is a great suggestion.  Now just need to find another concert or B-ball game to attend!

Matt, next time you are at Barclays Center, try the Brooklyn Burger with the "meaty" patty at NextLevel Burger (across the street). It's is entirely plant-based and pretty tasty.

I'm most excited and fearful about taking on the vegetarian challenge for 3 weeks. In our careers, we talk about making incremental changes to efficiencies in buildings helping to limit GHG emissions as we slowly build new and refresh old building stock. A building can take a generation or more to be renewed and the path to realized benefit can be derailed by any number of things.  Its easy to feel feel helpless sometimes.  Im learning that meat agriculture has a similarly large impact on the environment and is largely avoidable with simple choices that can be made today, the next time we eat something. Understanding that impact and immediacy of it is empowering.

I am gonna miss those burgers tho....

Matt, that is a big deal and a big shift to try out. Let me know if you want a few recipes to try. And although they aren't the same thing, there has been a resurgence of meatless "burgers" in NYC recently - https://nyti.ms/2jAmPf9.
