REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Elizabeth Roberts 4/25/2018 9:33 AMI didn't know that bamboo was a better alternative to other materials. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsIn what other ways could you help girls overcome health barriers to being able to attend school?
Elizabeth Roberts 4/25/2018 9:31 AMI made a donation to Marie Stopes International, an organization that helps women learn about family planning. I had no idea that so many women don't have access to family planning education and resources. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. What kind of investment seems most feasible for you?
Elizabeth Roberts 4/24/2018 6:33 PMIn Idaho we should invest in geothermal power plants for generating electricity. Idaho imports electricity from neighboring states with coal power plants. The geothermal power plants would provide jobs as well as clean, renewable energy. We should also provide tax incentives for people to install geothermal systems for heating and cooling their homes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Elizabeth Roberts 4/23/2018 10:28 PMI watched videos about heat pumps, green roofs, bicycle culture, & sustainable architecture. One of my favorite places, The Netherlands, is a sustainability hotspot and I really enjoyed the video called Globally Great- Dutch Sustainability. They highlighted 5 innovations- energy from the ocean, buildings made from wooden modules, protein from insects, improving desalination, and better ways of growing trees in the desert. So many great ideas from one little country. -
Elizabeth Roberts 4/21/2018 10:47 PMToday I learned a bit about methane digesters for production of methane from dairy manure, human waste, and food waste by watching some you tube videos. Here's one about methane digesters in Colorado: https://youtu.be/ASoXPy8RWlQ. In Europe, there's more demand for renewable energy so they're leading the way on biogas production. Perhaps the cities of the future will produce biogas from human sewage and use that biogas to power city vehicles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Elizabeth Roberts 4/06/2018 7:31 PMMany restaurants don't offer many good meat-free choices. I try to patronize restaurants that offer delicious vegan choices. A tax on meat might help to persuade people to eat less meat. Just like a cigarette tax deters people from an unhealthy habit, a tax on meat would deter people from consuming a food that is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Education would help too- my daughter's boyfriend became a vegan after watching the film What the Health? -
Elizabeth Roberts 4/06/2018 4:39 PMI’m on a trip and I packed a refillable plastic bottle & a ceramic cup this time. I usually use a paper cup for coffee at the hotel & this time I’ll try to remember to use the ceramic cup. But old habits are hard to break..... -
Elizabeth Roberts 4/03/2018 10:57 AMI've invited members of my family to join our team. I'm hoping to learn some unexpected ways that I can clean up my act and leave a better world for my children.
