Food
Keep Track of Wasted Food
#3 Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Transport
Use Public Transit
#37 Mass Transit
I will use public transit 2 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to 0.51 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Alex Rogers 4/22/2018 6:45 AMThis continues to be an inspirational process. Every day I find my thoughts challenged. I'm seeing opportunities for conservation not only in the areas which I chose to focus on for this challenge, but throughout most aspects of my life. This has really been a great experience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportHow has your access to various kinds of transporation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Alex Rogers 4/14/2018 8:27 AMI grew up in a city which doesn't have public transportation. Everyone simply drove everywhere. Using public transit was challenging at first, because it was foreign to me. With time I was able to become comfortable with public transit as well as understand its benefits -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Alex Rogers 4/14/2018 8:26 AMI'd rather use that money on tuition, or leisure activities, or possibly travel. -
Alex Rogers 4/13/2018 12:53 PMToday I made the (somewhat) challenging decision to walk (about two miles) to a store as opposed to taking a lyft. Again participating in this challenge has been helpful. If it wasn't for this I likely wouldn't have even considered walking as an option. I appreciate that this is causing me to challenge some of my typical thinking and stretch some boundaries.-
Kim Smith 4/14/2018 6:26 PMThat is a big decision, Alex! Walking can be so healthy, but it also adds the cost of time. I am glad that you pointed out that the EcoChallenge helped provide the impetus. It was designed using psychological theories, so it is interesting how making a public commitment, with encouragement for daily check-ins, can actually change our behavior.

Alex Rogers 4/11/2018 2:58 PMI'm glad that this is the section I signed up for. The food I typically waste was on my mind all day today and yesterday. I made myself and my partner smaller meals which wouldn't waste leftovers in the past few days. We've found that though we have good intentions with leftovers, they oftentimes go wasted. -
Alex Rogers 4/10/2018 7:12 AMToday I made myself too much breakfast. I actually signed up for the food waste tracking challenge after this occurred. I wonder if I had signed up before and it had been present in my mind if I would have acted differently and not thrown away a third of my breakfast. Here's to lunch!
