Lael Scharff 4/30/2018 5:12 PMBecause the Challenge was an every single day challenge, I found myself keeping all my actions front and center in my consciousness throughout April. I would love to see the composite effects of carbon reduction that the entire Challenge accomplished! -
Lael Scharff 4/10/2018 12:08 PMI attended a great presentation on recycling today at St. Ignatius parish in Portland OR. Portland has a good curbside recycling program, and this presentation by a City of Portland Sustainability expert taught us even more about the precise details of the anatomy of the recycling process, and details of what goes in and what gets tossed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat are your next steps for saving energy?
Lael Scharff 4/07/2018 3:33 PMSince we already have double-pane gas windows in our house and a digital thermostat, and new insulation -- the best thing I could do following an audit is to improve our conservation by investing in LED bulbs. I will gradually (based on budget) be purchasing LED's to replace our fixtures that currently have compact fluorescent bulbs which are better than incandescent bulbs, but still emit too much heat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?
Lael Scharff 4/05/2018 1:14 PMI supported a microloan through Kiva.org and I chose to donate to a woman in El Salvador (one of the poorest countries) who is building her pig farm! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Lael Scharff 4/05/2018 1:13 PMTime with family and friends; travel and adventures outdoors; sharing writing and memories with others; participation in church worship and community building. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Lael Scharff 4/05/2018 1:12 PMI use duct tape to repair many items, especially in our old 25 year-old car. Also, instead of just going out and buying a new laptop, I get my current one plenty of security and data cleaning programs to keep it from slowing down. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Lael Scharff 4/05/2018 1:10 PMI think many people are unaware of the many sources of protein that are NOT meat. I get a lot of my protein from nuts, seeds, nut butters, from tofu, a little cheese, and yogurt. -
Lael Scharff 3/09/2018 1:20 PMSt. Ignatius Jesuit parish in Portland Oregon is building an eco-justice profile of participants and actions. The EcoChallenge is a great way to build teamwork in our community, and to follow the lead of Pope Francis!
