I use biomass technology for heating if the form of wood and wood pellets. I didn't realize grass clipping fell under this category.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 2
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Gayla Schmidt's avatar
    Gayla Schmidt 4/20/2018 7:11 AM
Reducing the amount of coffee I drink will be difficult but worth it. One small step at a time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Gayla Schmidt's avatar
    Gayla Schmidt 4/20/2018 7:09 AM
Wow Coffee! I had no idea coffee was a contributor of deforestation. Definitely verified the my decision to buy a coffee plant, I've been contemplating for a couple seasons now. I know it takes a couple years to mature but definitely worth the wait, one small step in the right direction.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Now that you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, how will you view expiration dates differently?

    Gayla Schmidt's avatar
    Gayla Schmidt 4/19/2018 11:58 AM
I will pay more attention to which verbiage it is, use by, sell by, or best by. I grow or raise most of my own food so I seldom see these dates.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Install a Toilet Bank
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Gayla Schmidt's avatar
    Gayla Schmidt 4/18/2018 12:28 PM
Our household has prepared for changing water situations by changing out showerheads, reducing the volume of the water tank on the toilet. We catch rain water to water the garden. I have an artesian well I just plumbed into the houses main water supply as a backup.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Buy Bamboo
Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

    Gayla Schmidt's avatar
    Gayla Schmidt 4/18/2018 11:51 AM
I live rurally so it can be difficult to find Bamboo products locally. I try to use repurposed material. For example, I'm building a new (old) barn. I have been collecting as much used material as I can find.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings and Cities Research Heat Pumps
Why do you care about taking action on climate change?

    Gayla Schmidt's avatar
    Gayla Schmidt 4/17/2018 5:24 PM
Care about taking action on climate chance for the future of my children and future generations. I want them to enjoy a clean healthy environment, clean water, chemical and pesticide free foods.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Gayla Schmidt's avatar
    Gayla Schmidt 4/16/2018 12:13 PM
I have never heard about Silvopasture before now. The biggest advantage would be getting both pasture and wooded areas to work together, to create enough food and shelter for my herd. I have the perfect area and plan on trying this with my animals.
