REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHigher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?
Madeleine Shastri 4/25/2018 12:08 PMMany of our products are manufactiured in other countries so we don't have to deal with the environmental cost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Madeleine Shastri 4/25/2018 12:04 PMSustainable energy is very benneficial to not only the environment but the economy and will help progress our society in the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Madeleine Shastri 4/25/2018 7:24 AM3 or 4 days a week I carpool with my sister and her friends to school and 2 days a week I carpool with some friends home from practice.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Madeleine Shastri 4/25/2018 5:49 AMI would rather use the money that is wasted when food is thrown out to save up for college or something like that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Madeleine Shastri 4/24/2018 11:38 AMWhat concerns me the most about how I am affecting the planet is that to get bioplastics for the products used in my every day life I am killing plants and animals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodNow that you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, how will you view expiration dates differently?
Madeleine Shastri 4/24/2018 11:32 AMNow that I know the difference between use by and sell by dates I will be more carefull about which food I throw away and make sure the date I am looking at is an expiration date not a sell by date. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Madeleine Shastri 4/24/2018 11:29 AMTemperate forests are important to us because they take in and hold carbon dioxide from the air and this makes me realize how important it is for us t make sure we are reducing deforestaion. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Madeleine Shastri 4/23/2018 11:48 AMI knew that I had a bad diet but I didn’t realize how much it was harming forests. When I looked at the list of foods containing palm oil I realized I eat a lot of those foods and use a lot of those products regularly. One way I could decrease my negative impact is by switching to the diet my parents are on which is mostly plant based foods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. What kind of investment seems most feasible for you?
Madeleine Shastri 4/17/2018 11:59 AMI think that passive geothermal energy would be more realistic for me. One reason is that passive geothermal energy is more easily accessible in Asheville. Another reason is that passive energy is better for heating single houses. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationHad you ever heard of biomass techonology before this? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!
Madeleine Shastri 4/16/2018 11:20 AMNo I hadn't ever heard about it before. Something I learned that surprised me was that it produces zero new emmissions.
