Hi Anthony! I was just scrolling through the "everyone" feed and saw your post. You are so right, the current structure of the economy makes it almost impossible to avoid plastic. However, I've been buying package-free food for about a year now and it's not nearly as much work as it sounds! It's all about getting into a routine, as long as there's a place with bulk food near you. It takes me about ten minutes of prep to gather my jars/bags for each trip to the grocery store, and I get positive comments about buying package-free much more often than I get criticism or dirty looks. Even making small changes toward reducing plastic packaging helps - e.g. you could try buying your produce without any bag at all, plastic or otherwise, since it comes with its own natural packaging! Recycling plastic is a great first step, but it's not the best option since each each round of recycling degrades the quality of the plastic until eventually it becomes trash or pollution. Also, a lot of plastic packaging is not recyclable. This is something we need to work to change by using our buying power as a consumer and voicing our concerns to companies. Hope this provides some encouragement and food for thought! Reducing plastic pollution is possible!
