Meg Van Cleve 4/25/2018 3:29 PMNow I have researched about electric bikes, and it really does make sense to use that instead of a car to get to school! Although I will probably not get one right away, it's good to know that eco-friendly, alternative forms of transporatation are available and efficient. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Meg Van Cleve 4/25/2018 3:22 PMI want to prioritize relationships and especially my relationship with the outdoors. I haven't been getting outside enough lately and enjoying Asheville, and I need to focus on non materials in my day to day life. -
Meg Van Cleve 4/25/2018 10:36 AMSo far I have recruited an extra member! Claire Grady is now part of the eco drawdown challenge family-- so excited for her journey and for mine also! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Meg Van Cleve 4/25/2018 8:52 AMYes, living in Asheville we have a lot of sustainable alternatives when it comes to silverware or any kind of houseware items. I just need to make sure and buy bamboo instead of the plastic that I normally buy. -
Meg Van Cleve 4/25/2018 8:48 AMI am learning so much more about what kinds of small actions have a positive impact on the environment! Already I have had one less meat meal, and I am going to try to support local businesses run by women. It's going great! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Meg Van Cleve 4/25/2018 8:43 AMI can focus on seeking out businesses who are run by women, and try to shop there for my needs rather than other stores. I can also advertise these businesses by talking about them to others, and posting on social media to raise awareness of local businesses that support feminism and women empowerment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Meg Van Cleve 4/25/2018 8:41 AMThis reflects how much of a bubble we live in as Americans relating to food. By eating all this meat, we are not only disregarding the environmental impacts but also ignoring how much food we consume in relation to other countries where other people do not have the same access to food. Our values come from immediate gratification rather than looking at long term effects and sacrificing some pleasure for the long term benefit. If we can show the abuse of CAFOs (where most of our meat comes from), and also show how easy it is to eat meatless for only one meal, others will be inspired to do the same. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of this?
Meg Van Cleve 4/25/2018 8:37 AMPortion control can lend to a whole pletherea of other benefits. For instance, our heavy consumer culture in America that is fueled by overeating would drastically decrease if we all only ate what we needed. Not only will overall health improve, but buyers will stop supporting an economic system that leads to environmental disaster.
