  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Use Learn about Local Indigenous Practices
What did you learn about indigenous peoples' land management that you can apply in your own life?

I learned that indigenous people have a much more sustainable way of living, sustainable for both people and the environment. One important thing to note is that they only eat meat that they kill themselves. I think a good philosophy to live by is that if you aren't willing to kill a chicken or cow with your own hands, you shouldn't be consistently eating meat that has been processed and killed with machinery.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

I learned that being a vegetarian actually has a huge positive impact on deforestation. Large factory farms that produce meat for grocery stores and common consumption require huge stretches of land to both raise livestock and allow them to graze, and also raising crops to feed the livestock. These stretches of land almost always come from cutting down trees. Deforestation has a lot of problems linked to the action. Just one is that it has been estimated that 15 percent of the world’s global warming emissions are caused by tropical deforestation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I will only use my car to make necessary trips, not driving to any places solely for leisure.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Try Carpooling
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

I carpool with 2 of my teammates to all of our lacrosse games and practices.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

It's super easy to just pick up trash you see on the ground and carry it to the nearest trash can, and it makes a big difference.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Support Women-Owned Businesses
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women?

    Sammy Webb's avatar
    Sammy Webb 4/04/2018 10:37 AM
Supporting women is super important, especially because of the wage gap in America. It's not hard to find women owned businesses, as long as you are looking and paying attention.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Now that you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, how will you view expiration dates differently?

    Sammy Webb's avatar
    Sammy Webb 4/04/2018 10:36 AM
I learned how much food is wasted and thrown away just because it passed the sell by date. I now know that I can actually safely keep food much longer, especially if it's frozen.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Start a Social Media Campaign
How are people responding to the statistics you're sharing on social media?

    Sammy Webb's avatar
    Sammy Webb 4/04/2018 10:33 AM
No one has responded yet, but it makes me feel good to know that people are viewing and reading the stats that I posted.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

    Sammy Webb's avatar
    Sammy Webb 4/04/2018 10:32 AM
This is really easy for me especially because I know how big of an impact being a vegetarian is on the environment. I also don't think the production of meat is ethical at all so it makes me feel good to not contribute to factory farms and big corporations mass producing meat products.

My favorite challenge was sharing stats on gender inequality with my social media feed because there are really shocking stats and I think more people should know the reality.
