Tina Wong 4/20/2018 12:15 PMI was quite surprised by much of the information I learned in the "Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates" challenge. Here are some of the things that surprised me.- Food waste reduction is #3 in the Drawdown list - having potential to reduce 70.53 gigatons of CO2 emissions.
- USDA estimates food loss and waste at 30 percent of the food supply lost or wasted at the retail and consumer levels.
- Except for infant formula, product dating is not required by Federal regulations.
- Except for infant formula, dates are not an indicator of the product’s safety and are not required by Federal law.
There is a lot of useful information at the USDA website listed in the challenge -- including info on coloration of meat and safety tips for food donation: https://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsis/topics/food-safety-education/get-answers/food-safety-fact-sheets/food-labeling/food-product-dating/food-product-dating -
Tina Wong 4/12/2018 2:29 PMI completed the online energy audit challenge for my home. It was nice that it asked about the insulation in the house. This is a building issue that I struggle with because our house was built about a hundred years ago when insulation was not commonly used yet. We do what we can to seal up gaps around windows and doors to reduce air leakage. But I have not figured out a good solution for increasing the R-value of our walls. -
Tina Wong 4/09/2018 10:38 PMI had never heard of silvopasture until reading about it in one of the Drawdown challenges. It is listed as #9 in Drawdown's overall rank of solutions and has large potential for carbon sequestration. It makes a lot of sense that allowing for a biodiverse environment results in more productive land -- as opposed to maintaining a homogenous landscape. -
Tina Wong 4/09/2018 9:27 AMThere is an anaerobic digester at The Plant in Chicago. If you haven't been there, check it out! http://plantchicago.org/2016/02/12/what-is-the-plant/-
Brian Imus 4/09/2018 6:28 PMVery cool! I was just reading about - and donating to - biogas digesters at https://www.cooleffect.org/content/project/sichuan-china
