I made a donation to Marie Stopes International, an organization that helps women learn about family planning.  I had no idea that so many women don't have access to family planning education and resources.

    Electricity Generation
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. What kind of investment seems most feasible for you?

In Idaho we should invest in geothermal power plants for generating electricity.  Idaho imports electricity from neighboring states with coal power plants. The geothermal power plants would provide jobs as well as clean, renewable energy. We should also provide tax incentives for people to install geothermal systems for heating and cooling their homes.

I watched videos about heat pumps, green roofs, bicycle culture, & sustainable architecture.  One of my favorite places, The Netherlands, is a sustainability hotspot and I really enjoyed the video called Globally Great- Dutch Sustainability.  They highlighted 5 innovations- energy from the ocean, buildings made from wooden modules, protein from insects, improving desalination, and better ways of growing trees in the desert.  So many great ideas from one little country.

We are a local farmer and grow much of our own food.  Growing food brings energy to my life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

Eating lots of meat stems from having disposable income and much wealth.
It also comes from an attitude of "I can do what I want."

I feel responsible for the health of my neighbors when I cut pollution.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

Instead of pealing vegetables we use a scrub brush and only cut out damaged parts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of this?

I don't often over eat.  I feel better
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

We eat lots of let overs.  All other food scraps go to our chickens or the compost pile
