I had read the Drawdown Book at some length far prior to entering this challenge. I am afraid that the timing of entering this challenge did not work well for me, but I am trying to make up for this at this last moment.

A couple of years ago I decided that I needed to choose where to put my energy and attention during my remaining years. As a retired nurse, I decided that the analogy that best helped me make a such as a difficult choice was that of the ABC's of emergency first aid. And so, I equate caring for the earth as of first priority in my choice of what to do. Without providing the essential care to the person of ABC's (Airway, Breath, Circulation) whatever other care we might offer is futile. The same, it seems, is true of my efforts, for if we do not care for the sustainability of the planet, all else that we do will not matter, if we have not offered essential stewardship to the care of our only planet home.

I've been researching female-owned businesses and when possible will try to support these small businesses.

Sunday I didn't drive my car at ALL! It was wonderful to drive to work today and know I won't have to fill my gas tank until Saturday.

Today is day 7 of the Drawdown Ecochallenge and I've already learned so much about different food sources and ways to make small changes that add up to less waste. I find that as I learn more, I want to continue learning more. I am hoping I can pass along that desire to keep learning and making changes on to my students.

Rice is a staple in my diet. Rice paddies can be harmful to the environment so scientists are researching more sustainable ways to grow rice. The Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) was formed in 2011 to help promote more sustainable rice production but currently no brands of rice meet their standards. Mars (Uncle Ben's Rice) is committed to sourcing all their rice from farms that meet the SRP's standards by 2020. I've found a few organic rice sources but purchasing them from overseas and having them shipped is not practical. I'll keep looking into it.

How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

Looking into responsibly sourced palm oil is quite a research project. I spent 20 minutes looking at products that do not use palm oil or use responsibly sourced palm oil but I've barely scratched the surface. I'm going to do more research to ensure the hair, skin, and body products I'm using are not contributing to deforestation.

Next up, I'll also search for a shade-grown, fair trade coffee. That may take a lot of trials of different brands.

Thank you Erin. I'm checking at Vitamin cottage for my products and am switching some to Burt's Bees because they can trace the sources of their palm oil AND they take their packaging back for recycling.

Transport Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

I test drove the only hybrid minivan on the market.... Chrysler Pacifica.  I was impressed with the quiet but the salesman did not seem to take me seriously so I have a lot of unanswered questions.
