I found out how to prevent food from spoiling in my refrigerator--monitor leftovers daily, turn jarred fluids upside down to prevent air leakage into the jar.

Here is a tip for preventing food waste:  After opening and using part of a container of any semi-liquid food that has to be refrigerated, close the lid tightly, turn the container upside down, and place it inside a bowl to collect any leakage.  Then put the bowl and container into the refrigerator. The food will move downward and prevent air from entering the container around its lid. The lack of oxygen will delay growth of mold and resulting spoilage of the food.  This technique works for sour cream, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, salsa, etc.

I have been interested in Solar power and other renewables for years. I talk about it but don't do a lot about it. I read the project drawdown book and not sure where to start. The list ranking  impact was surprising and helped me to focus on energy and refrigeration management.  The Eco challenge has helped me to get started. I plan to purchase renewable electricity from my electric company for  3 months. In addition to 5 minute showers I turn off the water when soaping up. While vacation trying to minimize food waste by buying bulk breakfast foods, bowls, cups, and reusing the plastic cups and spoon instead of throwing out each time.

What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

Meat is convenient and satisfying, and it's not as expensive as it ought to be considering its environmental impact.  We need to price carbon, so that the real environmental cost of meat is reflected in its price.

I'm learning about the problem of food waste by reading American Wasteland by Jonathan Bloom.
