REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Express My SupportWhat do you like most about biking in your city? What would you like to improve?
HILARIE BOWMAN 7/10/2018 3:02 PMMy city has a lot of bike routes away from traffic so it is pleasant and easy to get around by bike even if there are some bridges that are a bit steep to get up to.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Give a MicroloanGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?
HILARIE BOWMAN 7/10/2018 3:00 PMWomen have given birth to their children and have the instinct to nurture them and cooperate with others to nourish their children growing up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Support Nutrient ManagementHow does environmental quality influence your sense of community?
HILARIE BOWMAN 4/21/2018 12:54 AMI relate to people who are caring for the environment and organic farmers and growers and feel we are a sub-group within the general population. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Explore Other Food SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
HILARIE BOWMAN 4/15/2018 3:17 PMI found out that rice doesn't need to be grown in flooded paddy fields and that if the rice fields are drained even just once during the growth of the crop then methane emissions are reduced considerable -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
HILARIE BOWMAN 4/13/2018 2:11 PMThat's easy for potatoes I have nearly always cooked them in their skins. Broccoli stalks cook up well too. When I buy vegetables eg lettuce eaing it on the day I buy it means the outer leaves don't go off. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Choose Better Wood ProductsBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
HILARIE BOWMAN 4/11/2018 3:43 AMWHSmith sells Woodland trust paper which though it is not using recycled paper it does have some good green credentials. Its assessment of the resources used to make the paper is based on the whole lifecycle from trees to waste and trees are planted to match the CO2 produced in the paper's manufacture. Each pack sold means 5p to Woodland trust which is a start but should be at least 25p in my opinion. If you buy 3 reams they cost £4.33 each. (For comparison The Works paper is £4 a ream )
Happy to share 3 reams if you only want one ream at a time.
Forests provide me with Brazil Nuts and oxygen and habitat for many species which makes me feel happy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about Regenerative AgricultureClean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. In what ways can you support your closest regenerative agriculture farm?
HILARIE BOWMAN 4/09/2018 4:31 PMI can support the countryside restoration trust http://www.countrysiderestorationtrust.com/ and go and visit their Farm in Barton Cambridgshire. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Fund Family PlanningWhen family planning focuses on healthcare provision and meeting the expressed needs of women, it results in empowerment, equality, and well-being, and the benefits to the planet are side effects. Why is family planning an important civil rights consideration?
HILARIE BOWMAN 4/09/2018 3:55 PMCivil rights must include women as equal partners in all enterprises. Access to family planning allows women to take part in civil life at the times when they want to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
HILARIE BOWMAN 4/05/2018 2:36 PMYes, and in the UK Knepp farm in Kent is a rewilding example with cattle, pigs and deer amongst the trees. https://knepp.co.uk/ the biggest advantage is the build up of organic matter in the mostly undisturbed soil and the return of natural wild-life and less intensive animal husbandry -
HILARIE BOWMAN 4/04/2018 9:10 AMI have read Drawdown and think it is the best book so far in listing solutions for global warming problems. However to reduce CO2 implies people taking actions. This challenge is a good way to spur me into action plus I can join in with others who are keen to help and/or have a competitive streak.
