Carey Compton 4/25/2018 5:55 PMGreat Job everyone. I find this challenge very inspiring and hope you do too. Now we can continue with these sustainable habits every day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Communicate With My Elected OfficialsWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Carey Compton 4/24/2018 5:56 PMI work for NJDEP so I have contacted my NJ legislatures as well as the US Legislatures including the POTUS # 45 several times. During this challenge I have spent time going to the March for Science in Trenton. I will continue to urge both NJ and US Legislatures to put forth laws that protect our environment and that includes divesting my fossil fuels and supporting renewable energy on all levels (i.e., ground and air transportation, to personal care products). I think my parents and the way I was brought up has a great deal of why I am so inspired to act on sustainable energy. Because the air was so bad, I developed asthma at an early age so my parents took me and my brothers camping and hiking in the mountains of the north eastern USA where I could breath easier. Now the air is much cleaner and I am on good medications. So I work hard now so that we won't go back to the 1960's environmentally. If you are younger and did not live through such a time, please read the book, "Silent Spring" sometime soon. -
Carey Compton 4/21/2018 1:11 PMOk, we have contract to get mulch so will start mulching in 2 weeks. I am relieved because this will help save the trees and plants in our yard. Thanks to the Drawdown Eco Challenge for the motivation. -
Carey Compton 4/18/2018 6:11 PMI keep walking out to the cube with stuff to recycle because they have not picked up our curb side recycling containers yet due to road construction - they are actually replacing the utility lines (i.e., gas, water and sewer). Then they will repave. I wish they were putting in solar roadway. I must be ahead of my time. I know there is such a thing. Anyone have solar for the road in their town? -
Carey Compton 4/17/2018 4:59 PMI have been eating vegetarian meals for months now. However, I have to admit tonight, I at cheese and should not I know. I feel better without it. I had a weak moment. -
Carey Compton 4/17/2018 4:54 PMRecycling everything I can I do on a daily basis. This habit is part of me. Buying things without the plastic on them is becoming a part of me. When I have plastic from like the big dog food bag we get, I have recently emailed that company to ask them to please consider using potato starch plant based material. I have emailed to ask several companies this week alone because there are alternatives like the bamboo toothbrush that I use and will never use a plastic one again. I hope this helps others reduce their use of fossil fuel based plastic bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Carey Compton 4/16/2018 3:50 PMMulching is one way we can all save on water and clean water is a key to our survival. I have to find a company that put down mulch properly around the trees and plants. I found several and will get cost estimates from each and ask them how they put the mulch around trees because we don't want to put a volcano around a tree, that would eventually kill the tree. Instead we want to make a donut around the tree so as not to cover the tree bark with mulch. I hope you make donuts with your mulch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Advocate For Greener VehiclesHow does advocating for green vehicles in your community connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to fuel-efficient vehicles?
Carey Compton 4/09/2018 11:58 AMAdvocating for green vehicles in my community is directly connected to my values. I believe in working hard for the environment to search out ways we can live more sustainably. Green Vehicles are the best way to live more sustainable since our typical biggest carbon footprint is our transportation. Are you considering buying a green vehicle or do you already have one? Which one - I would love to hear how you like it.-
Joan Olawski-Stiener 4/25/2018 8:37 AMHi Carey, I had a Prius hybrid for about 8 years and loved it! I wanted to get another one, but the new version is too small for my 2 shepherds who are with me a lot. So I was thrilled to find the Hyundai Ionic hybrid, which is about the size of my old Prius and is giving me about 54-55 mpg. I hope to get an electric car in the future when they have a longer driving range and when there are more charging stations around. I'm guessing that that will happen soon! -
Carey Compton 4/16/2018 3:52 PMDavid, That is awesome. I am afraid I have to wait until I finish paying for my second daughters college first. And I hope to buy an electric that will allow me to visit my Dad who is 350 miles away from me.

REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Eliminate Toxic PlasticsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Carey Compton 4/06/2018 5:56 PMI bought some pansies today in those plastic containers - how do I avoid that. The only thing I can think to do is recycle them if I can at the curb side. Otherwise, I will bring the containers back to the store where I bought the pansies. Oh and I don't use straws. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Carey Compton 4/06/2018 5:51 PMSame oatmeal cereal breakfast to get me going, vegan wrap for lunch and crackers and salad for dinner. Feeling good. Hope you are too.
