REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Pat Cornelison 4/25/2018 12:04 PMPalm oil and coffee seem to be my worst sins. I am willing to work on palm oil and I will look for shade grown coffee. -
Pat Cornelison 4/24/2018 7:50 AMFor a few days of the challenge I did not manage to complete any challenges. Just too busy. I have tried to make it up on other days. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesNow that you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, how will you view expiration dates differently?
Pat Cornelison 4/24/2018 7:49 AMI already knew the difference so this will not change my behavior much. I did follow a link to learn about the color of meat which was helpful. Like, chicken can be safe to eat even if it is pink after cooking as long as it is at least 165 degrees. I hate overcooked chicken so I am happy to discover that the temperature, which I check anyway, is the key and not the color. -
Pat Cornelison 4/24/2018 7:31 AMI did the on line home energy analysis. Since I have explored energy savings int he past it did not tell me much that I don't know. But I will consider replacing our washer/dryer which is now 30 years old. Maybe a new one will work better? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Online Energy AuditWhat are your next steps for saving energy?
Pat Cornelison 4/24/2018 7:28 AMI live in an old brick building. We have already added roof insulation, but we cant add insulation to the exterior walls. Our windows are insulated but leaky. We have added interior storm windows to some of them and that helps with comfort and energy. Probably the best things I could do would be to get a new boiler. Ours is 30 years old. I explored getting a high efficiency one, but we would need to add a new chimney, and we really use very little gas to heat, so the payback would be over 20 years. Most of our lighting has been replaced. One other thing I could do is replace the washer/dryer which is 30 years old. It is still working well though and was considered energy efficient at the time we bought it. We could also get new window air conditioners, but again we only use them for a few weeks/year. I should really do an EUI calculation to see how much energy we really use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Purchase a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1 ton of CO2. Imagine a giant balloon with a diameter of 10 yards. If this balloon were filled with CO2, it would weigh about 1 ton. This flight would fill just about one of these balloons. What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Pat Cornelison 4/13/2018 9:19 AMI travel a lot for work right now so this is a difficult issue for me. I was able to make a donation to offset the carbon for an upcoming trip and will make a habit of doing this in the future. -
Pat Cornelison 4/13/2018 9:16 AMI offset the carbon for plane travel for an upcoming trip. I was able to do the calculation right on the Delta website and link to the Nature Conservancy to make a donation to a reforestation project. The actual carbon was about a half ton :( . The cost was only about $9 but the minimum donation is $15. I didn't mind donating more considering that I have made several other trips already this year without making a carbon offset donation. -
Pat Cornelison 4/13/2018 7:13 AMREDUCE PAPER WASTE: Caitlin, Buil and Charli helped me figure out that in this office we use over 200 paper coffee cups per week. Not only do these cups end up in in the trash, each one costs 10 cents. I am advocating that more of us use his or her own reusable cup or mug and rinse it out in the sink each morning. (No need to put them all through the dishwasher.) And an insulated cup keeps your coffee or tea hot or cold for longer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Support Indigenous Peoples' Land ManagementIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Pat Cornelison 4/09/2018 10:20 AMSaw a TV show this weekend about Shinto religion in Japan. I had not realized before that it is largely nature worship. I am going to find out more about it. The Japanese have been living an a very limited land mass for centuries. I think there is a lot we can learn from them about maintaining a balance with nature. -
Pat Cornelison 4/09/2018 10:01 AMWhat if I eat more than 2 meatless meals in a day? Can I get extra points?
