The need for family planning is great through out the world, especially in under-developed and 3rd world countries. Many young women are lacking access to necessary information and resources necessary to give them knowledge about and freedom of reproductive rights. There are a multitude of health benefits this creates, from STI/STD avoidance to reduction of fatality from complications, in addition to the impact it has on our environment (population).

What are other ways in which developing countries without the same infrastructure as developed nations can bypass old ways of doing things for cleaner and more environmentally friendly technologies?

    Tiffany Estill's avatar
    Tiffany Estill 4/10/2018 10:11 AM
Low-income countries can obtain clean energy through various ways, from in-stream hydro power to micro wind turbines, and maximized through microgrids. The in-stream hydro power moves with the current of the water and if implemented correctly allows for minimal impact on the river or stream. Micro wind turbines are much quieter and can be strategically placed in rural and high wind locations. Microgrids, a localized group of electricity sources, make it easier to avoid energy waste and allow for independent operation from macrogrids as physical or economic constraints require.

What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

    Tiffany Estill's avatar
    Tiffany Estill 4/09/2018 11:07 AM
Convenience and easy-access (fast food) has contributed to our region's higher consumption of meat. A melting pot of cultures, we highly value our time and don't always practice conscious eating. A shift of this perspective would require an approach of both listening/understanding those we teach and providing support and resources to them to help with the transition. To make this transition I've had to learn about meal planning as finding something meatless, nutritious and low-waste can be difficult depending on where you live. A great place to start would be in our schools! Our children are the seeds of tomorrow!

What could you do differently to waste less?

Eat out less. Make goods instead of purchase them pre-made. Research solutions to products that offer low to zero-waste. Grow my own food.

Had you heard of the term silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

I had not heard of the term Silvopasture before and was quite surprised at the actual meaning while researching it further. Silva meaning forest or woods and pasture meaning feeding or grazing--is the practice of incorporating grazing beasts in a prepared orchard or forest.  I came an across a wealth of information about this technique and found a great article from an established horticulturist/forester who explained that this technique has been long practice by our species. It has not gone by the name Silvopasture but much simpler like orchard grazing. This practice is much more advantageous to grass only grazing (fields) due to the higher nitrogen/nutrition levels of the grazing material and an environment that make growing multiple crops possible (e.g. nuts, mushrooms, wood, etc). Not to mention it creates a better life for livestock and reduces methane impact. A win-win!

I have learned about some Regenerative Agriculture practices in the past. I know many individuals who are invested in the practice of Permaculture due to its extreme benefits of low-maintenance, self-sufficiency and sustainability. I highly recommend checking out the book Biomimicry, which discusses transitioning our agriculture towards a more natural approach by observing how nature accomplishes feats such as pest reduction, soil erosion, etc.

While researching Regenerative Agriculture today I came across the paper, mentioned on the Drawdown EcoChallenge resources, published by Rodale Insitute titled, ' Regenerative Organic Agriculture and Climate Change.' It paints a vivid picture of global warming and the future we face if we do not change. By practicing Regenerative Agriculture, we can return the carbon from our atmosphere back to our soil creating a rich environment for our plants. This can create a deficit in the carbon measurements in our atmosphere and can give our species a fighting chance against global warming. In addition to this, trials have shown Regenerative practices to be highly competitive with Conventional methods used by many farmers today. I highly recommend reading the full paper if you get a chance!

While researching about how to become more involved in the push towards Regenerative Agriculture, I came across this article that goes over steps to develop a network within your community to start discussions and migration within your region towards this essential practice. Linking below!

Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. In what ways can you support your closest regenerative agriculture farm?

    Tiffany Estill's avatar
    Tiffany Estill 4/04/2018 2:47 PM
By educating myself about Regenerative Agriculture and what local farms are actively practicing it. By spreading awareness to my friends, family, and community, and encouraging them to do the same. By aiming to primarily purchase produce from farms that practice Regenerative Agriculture. By supporting organizations that are invested in Regenerative Agriculture. By targeting and reaching out to local farms/organizations in my region about the benefits of Regenerative Agriculture, the growing market in support, and the importance of making the change.
