Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Every time it rains in San Diego the beaches are close for swimming. This has to do with run-off from the San Diego River and the Tijuana River. Actions to reduce these days include cleaning up river beds and preventing homeless encampments along the rivers. San Diego could also do a better job of housing homeless so they would not need to live in river watersheds.

One of the largest energy consumers in the US is the electric motor. Research shows that retrofitting industrial motors with higher efficiency motors would drastically reduce energy consumption.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

San Diego could take another large step forward by implementing a municipal composting system. We could also make a big splash if the city allowed all food beyond sell by dates to be donated to homeless shelters and food banks.  Leftover food could be composted and or used in a methane digester.

If water prices were higher in our area people would think twice about watering lawns. In our climate lawns waste incredible amounts of water.

Why do you care about taking action on climate change?

    Bing Guerin's avatar
    Bing Guerin 4/19/2018 9:50 AM
I feel strongly that we can all make a difference in climate change and we all need to do our part. I want to preserve our way of life on this earth and not make it worse for future generations.
