REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Mara Hill 4/25/2018 12:02 AMI'm curious as to the "why" - is this out of need? Seems like we could make an impact on either side - better supporting women, who in turn better support their communities, or meeting community needs so women don't feel the onus is on them. In any event, continuing to support women-owned organizations or places that employ a high number of women seems advantageous. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Mara Hill 4/25/2018 12:00 AMSocial justice causes or meeting basic needs - housing first programs, or donations to Planned Parenthood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Mara Hill 4/24/2018 11:59 PMWithout doing literally any research, my hunch is that people in North America equate meat with protein, and equate protein with a means of managing weight. Additionally, I think meat might be considered to be somewhat of an indicator of wealth or resources. I think providing additional education and options to people at a young age, and by putting efforts towards food-production policies, could help shift our culture around food. -

Mara Hill 4/21/2018 11:52 PMFinding a balance regarding supporting women-owned businesses - trying to simply opt to go to these businesses when I am doing so already, instead of increasing my consumerism simply to reach this goal. Have mostly veered towards coffee shops owned by women when I'm looking for a place to study or stop in already, which has been a good compromise. -
