This challenge has been very educational.  I look forward to expanding my knowledge and maintaining the changes I made.

Since starting this challenge, I have noticed a significant reduction in the amount of food I threw away on the last few trash days.  Being mindful takes little effort, but clearly makes a much bigger impact than I was expecting.

Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I would rather use this money for a family vacation!

Just changed all the fluorescent tubes in our basement to LED.  The light is far brighter, more energy efficient and dependable.  The old fluorescents would flash and flicker, but wouldn't always turn on.  These LED bulbs turn right on.  Gladly my local Lowe's store accepts the old tubes for recycling!  Thank you Lowe's!

I never thought about wasted food as being environmentally unfriendly.  I know it probably sounds silly, but I knew it was bad to waste but not thinking of the bigger picture.  When I thought about food, I thought about composting peelings and recycling cans and packaging.  This challenge has really made me think so much bigger!  Everyone should do this!  What an eye opener.....

This is my first time participating in the challenge and I had a hard time deciding which things to choose to participate in.  I have learned so much in so little time from truth in food expiration dates to the impact of changing your household light bulbs (incandescent and fluorescent).  The small effort required to participate has made me more knowledgeable on these subjects and a steward to share what I have learned with friends, family and co-workers.

Thanks for the encouragement, Mari-Lynn.  I thought I was pretty 'eco' savvy, but I am finding out that my knowledge was much more limited than I thought!  This challenge has been extremely eye opening. Much more to think about than just recycling and reducing your carbon footprint!!! Enjoy!

I did a little online research and realized that many foods are still completely fine after the expiration date, particularly unrefrigerated food.  I will keep this in mind when evaluating in the future.

I purchased a pineapple last week, but it was very green.  I didn't pay attention to it throughout the week and this weekend realized it was getting very ripe.  I cut it up and packed it in lunches for today.  It would have spoiled and been wasted had I not used it right away.  Trying to be more mindful of produce I buy and using it before it spoils.

I didn't think we had any leaks, but we put food coloring in our toilet tanks and found our second bath toilet was leaking.  We adjusted the mechanism, did the food color test again and no more leaks!
