Land Use
Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
#39 Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
I will donate to The Nature Conservancy, which works with Indigenous Peoples to secure land tenure and resource rights, support improved governance and local institutions, assist in natural resource mapping, planning and management; and strengthen livelihoods and sustainable economic development.
Transport
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
#26 Electric Vehicles
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
#4 Plant-Rich Diet
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
#3 Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Electricity Generation
Support Microgeneration in Low Income Countries
#48 In-Stream Hydro, #76 Micro Wind, #78 Microgrids
I will make a donation to a nonprofit that installs microgeneration in low income countries.
Women and Girls
Give a Microloan
#62 Women Smallholders
I will give 2 microloan(s) to women who need help starting a business.
Electricity Generation
Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
#29 Wave and Tidal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.
Electricity Generation
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
#18 Geothermal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Transport
Use Public Transit
#37 Mass Transit
I will use public transit 100 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to 13.79 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Electricity Generation
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
#30 Methane Digesters (large), #64 Methane Digesters (small)
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Materials
Properly Dispose of Refrigerants
#1 Refrigerant Management
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to properly dispose of my refrigerator, freezer, and other refrigerants at the end of their useful lives.
Food
Donate
#21 Clean Cookstoves
I will donate to Cool Effect's cookstove projects or another nonprofit that installs clean cookstoves in low-income countries.
Women and Girls
Learn about the Need for Family Planning
#7 Family Planning
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the need for family planning globally.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Give a MicroloanGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. What kind of investment seems most feasible for you?
Mark Levin 4/14/2018 7:56 AMThis video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oU8Jw24e68) was really helpful for understanding which geological, political, and economic conditions make an area feasible for investment in geothermal energy. (The speaker was pretty negative about the prospects of switching from fossil fuels to wind and solar, but hey, she's a geologist.) I now see how much investment needs to go into evaluating a site for its geothermal potential before investing in it. I was also surprised to see the parallels between geothermal energy extraction and fracking technologies -- and rather than concerns about drilling fluid used in fracking, geothermal energy introduces the possibility of microbiological contamination for subsurface aquifers. Anyway, it's an interesting technology for areas that meet certain, specific criteria. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?
Mark Levin 4/14/2018 7:52 AMI hadn't previously realized how many different varieties of wave and tidal wave energy are available. Back when I studied energy generation methodologies in 2004-2005, there were fewer options available. I'm also impressed with how they've solved some of the concerns about biofouling. Modern technologies are much more easily raised above the water or towed into port for servicing.
