Transport Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

The United States government has added tax exemptions for those that are purchasing green vehicles. Because of this, I can save money in regards to buying a new car if it fills their quota.

Another benefit would be the amount of money that I save on gas. Due to the less amount of money needed to fill up my tank, the amount of money that I save could then be used to cover the cost of the vehicle, or used for something else.

The last reason would be the variety that there is with fuel efficient vehicles. There are a lot of options to choose from whether if someone has a family, or it's just for two people. With the large variety of options, people are allowed to have more choice in regards to what they could buy.

Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I could use this money that I have saved to upgrade my PC, my car. Or, I think the greatest, and most beneficial approach would be to save it for emergency, or investment purchases. Saving the most amount of money adds up over time. And having done so, it means I also can have a greater impact on the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of this?

With smaller plates we take in less calories, which in return can help us maintain our body weight.

Smaller plates lead to less food consumption which leads to having your groceries lasting longer.

Smaller plates can help reduce the amount of CO2 emitted into the air because of the procedures used to harvest the food. With less food wasted, this means that there are less pollutants in the air.

Today I have added two more challenges to my list. And they revolve around food! I will eat less food, and use smaller plates when I eat.

Electricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?

What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?

There are three types of tidal turbines.

Tidal Barrages - These are damn like structures, that have a turbine underneath the dam. As the time comes in and out, the turbine is spun by the flowing water to produce electricity. These are the most efficient forms of tidal turbines.

Tidal Fences - These are operate as giant turn tables, and are the second most efficient form of producing electricity. They move when the current and flow of the tide turns the turntable.

Tidal Turbines - They act as normal wind turbines, but are just under water. It uses the kinetic energy of the turbine to produce electricity that is attached to the generator of the structure.

Tidal power is actually more powerful as compared to air. The reason being is, tidal power applies more pressure, which in return produces more energy.

    The drawbacks
Tidal power is very location specific. Picking a location for tidal power is quite difficult because the correct conditions must be met. I was quite surprised to find this out, since I thought all coast lines would be able to support them. Tidal energy may not be able to handle the demand for power by people, since the tides change on a daily basis. Lastly tidal energy isn't widely accepted. It's very minuscule as compared to other forms as to how we can get our energy.

Now that you know the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates, how will you view expiration dates differently?

Use By Date - When the manufacturer wants to have the consumer use the product. Once the date has been reached, the food can begin to spoil quickly.

Best By Date - When the food begins to go bad, lose its nutrients, and begins to lose the optimal flavor that it should have.

Sell By Date - Used by retailers only. This is a date of when the product should be taken off the shelf for sale. It's not bad for another few days, and possibly even a week. The quality and flavor is just lost as the days go by.

When I am shopping for bakery items I will use the sell by date. I will try to make sure that the food is good for a minimum of 5 days, so I can give myself some leeway to consume it. I will be self-conscious as to what I should pick out for food if it begins to spoil quickly.

I will be doing a minimum of one challenge today. As stated before, I will be focusing on the energy consumption for today. If I have time, I will work on my second challenge, which revolves around food.

Tomorrow I will look into the electricity section, since the windy day, as well as the wind turbine on campus reminded me of it.

I hope everyone is doing quite fine with their challenges at hand!

Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. In what ways can you support your closest regenerative agriculture farm?

    Christopher Lodi's avatar

In what ways can you support your closest regenerative agriculture farm?

I could start a Regenerative Agriculture Farm within my community, if my community doesn't have one.

I need to first learn on how to cultivate the land, how to properly grow food, as well as learn the basics of farming.

I need to then form a small group that is willing to participate and is willing to put in the time and effort to make a change. Having a minimum of 5 people in my group is the a good place to start.

I then need to know my group members inside and out. We need to learn from each other. We need to discuss what we have found with outside research to make our farm a success.

We then need to develop a strategy as to how we can go about with making this farm possible. We may need to ask support from our local community, government, or businesses.

Lastly, create a public image and educate the masses of how we want to see an operation such as this in full effect. The more that people are informed, the better. We then could get more support, in order to pursue our goal by practicing safe farming techniques and practices.
