REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
lauren loosveldt 4/25/2018 3:37 PMWe project that temperate forest restoration will expand to an additional 235 million acres through natural regeneration. Though this is much lower than the available area for tropical forest restoration, it still sequesters 22.6 gigatons of carbon dioxide by 2050. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Advocate for Solar InstallationHow does advocating for this type of technology connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
lauren loosveldt 4/25/2018 3:24 PMJust takes the facts, understanding impact from a cost perspective is an easy enough driver for anyone to take hold of, let alone environmental - clean air, resource use reduction....etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Learn about Local Indigenous PracticesWhat did you learn about indigenous peoples' land management that you can apply in your own life?
lauren loosveldt 4/25/2018 3:23 PMIndigenous peoples have secure land tenure on 1.3 billion acres globally, though they live on and manage much more. Our analysis assumes higher rates of carbon sequestration and lower rates of deforestation on lands managed by indigenous peoples. If forestland under secure tenure grows by 909 million acres by 2050, reduced deforestation could result in 6.1 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions avoided. This solution could bring the total forest area under indigenous management to 2.2 billion acres, securing an estimated protected stock of 232 gigatons of carbon, roughly equivalent to over 850 gigatons of carbon dioxide if released into the atmosphere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?
lauren loosveldt 4/25/2018 3:20 PMin addition to its abundant solar, wind and geothermal resources, the Pacific Northwest is also uniquely situated to capture the renewable energy of the ocean. Special buoys, turbines, and other technologies can capture the power of waves and tides and convert it into clean, pollution-free electricity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Use Public TransitHow has your access to various kinds of transporation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
lauren loosveldt 4/25/2018 1:10 PMI've ridden the bus for as long as i remember. as an adult now i take the MAX and i love the time to myself to read or simply unwind before coming home or going into work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
lauren loosveldt 4/25/2018 1:07 PMI'm concerned about how our society supports a consumer mentality, use and replace things are not valued and we are shown there is no need to value them long term as long as we replace them...with something new. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Choose Recycled PaperHow can you take your action a step further?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
lauren loosveldt 4/25/2018 10:20 AMproper disposal of waste! find a local effort to dispose of e-waste, chemicals and paints.
