What could you do differently to waste less?

I really think its important to recycle what we can, but even more important is reducing what we buy that needs to be recycled. I'm paying more attention to packaging and trying to buy less of it. I'm also bringing my own produce bags, grocery bags, and a bag to put bulk spices in. I am meeting with the city recycling coordinator soon. I have a collection of things I'm not sure about recycling to ask about. I will learn more when she tours me around the Timberline Recycling Center.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

I envision a community that uses it's waste to create clean energy and provides healthy, affordable, locally produced food that sustains farmers without harming the planet.  There will be no need for landfills because there will be a path for every item to be consumed maximally and then put to use again in some form in a sustainable way.

    Materials Go Paperless
What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

I want to have less paper in my life. It is such a menace!  I have to go through the mail everyday and recycle or throw away lots of advertising that I don't even look at. I unsubscribe to catalogs that come my way, but it is a constant battle. I would prioritize my time and our environment over advertisers who clutter up my life and my mailbox.

I cancelled my paper subscription to the newspaper and went with the online version. This will reduce quite a bit of newspaper that needs to be recycled at my house. I love having a physical paper, but the waste is just too much. I will miss the crossword, but I can buy a crossword book or find one online.

Electricity Generation Advocate for Solar Installation
How does advocating for this type of technology connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?

Advocating for our city to lease space on  business rooftops to install solar panels, is a great way to improve our city's sustainability without taking away city owned Open Space and Natural Areas for this purpose. It is also a more equitable way to deliver lower energy rates to citizens who cannot pay for their own solar panels or do not own property. This aligns with my value to keep our native areas free of development, expand use of clean energy, and the desire to lessen the impact of climate change on the less advantaged.
