I have had so many conversations from wind power to biodigesters, to the sequestration of carbon in wood built structures. I think I'm starting to actually GET some of it. Anybody have a favorite shade grown, Fair Trade coffee? I'm now choosing to buy Organic Choice tea. Based in Seattle, Washington, they are one of the few tea companies that packages teas in the U.S.

Here is a review: https://runtomunch.com/2013/02/14/choice-organic-teas-review/  Has anyone else found earth friendly favorite products that they would like to share?

    Best,
    Terry

Cafe Mam coffee which is organic, fair trade, shade-grown, and comes in 100% recyclable or compostable packaging materials (compostable lining). This local company donates 2% of sales to nonprofit organizations dedicated to organic agriculture, social justice, and environmental causes.

It was exciting to learn about  emerging wave and tidal energy technologies. And it happening here, on the Oregon Coast. Listen to this:
"Capturing wave energy is the next frontier in the quest for new safe, clean energy sources,” Roblan said. “This project is supported by Fishermen Involved in Natural Energy and a broad coalition of commercial fishermen. It also will, we hope, make Oregon the first choice for wave energy pioneers who need to test and demonstrate their devices’ ability to harness the energy of the ocean to power our communities.”

Go Eugene Green! I am finding that "general busy-ness" started getting in my way this week so wanted a check-in to say that what I have learned this far. There is so much to learn! That having this go to place with so many resources and information really has streamlined the effort. (I can go shallow or deep.) I am particularly interested in the health of our oceans and waterways:

    Did you know?
"Trash accumulates in 5 ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health and economies." https://www.theoceancleanup.com/

And about our FOOD, of course. Always interested in food. ;)

Great job Terry! I agree with you, that Drawdown has streamlined learning (and provided a focus) with this a go to place  I was staying away from learning about the garbage patches in the ocean but being a regular NPR listener I finally learned something and got online briefly to learn more. I think about those garbage patches every day and wonder how we can do something to reduce the size and prevent garbage from continually heading out to sea. I also think about the small plastic bits in the expensive sea salt that I purchase. OK, I'll look at the web site you provided. Thanks!

I fed eight people an all organic vegetarian dinner and dessert (with local wine, of course). Laughed and played games for a non-media evening of fun! AND shared my new found knowledge on food labeling myths. There is joy in ECOChallenge!

If you didn't catch it last evening at the Bijou find an opportunity to see the film "Wasted! The Story of Food Waste." Shocking, entertaining, irreverent and hopeful. I am so impressed on how dedicated people are meeting this global challenge.

How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Terry Parker's avatar
    Terry Parker 4/04/2018 10:50 AM
This isn't as easy as it seems on the surface. It isn't the diet part as much as the finding and  elimination of ingredients in food such as palm oil. Likewise biting the bullet of giving up that "great buy" on coffee to make sure shade grown, organic, Rainforest Alliance and Fair Trade applies. I've learned a lot already! I persevere.

Thanks for sharing this information on the effects of purchasing food. It is more expensive to avoid processed food with palm oil and to choose organic, Fair Trade.

How does using human-powered transportation make you feel?

Riding my bike and walking makes me feel healthier and more aware of my surroundings. I feel like I have so many mobility options that it frees me from thinking I am reliant or dependent on my  car.

I agree Terry about biking and walking. I have let my bike get lonely in the garage so it's time to challenge myself and earn points for our team. Alternative transportation is often, but not always, slower but so much healthier.
