The Ecochallenge has been a lot of fun and I love learning about all the small ways I can make a difference in my day-to-day life
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

    Malcolm Sales's avatar
    Malcolm Sales 4/24/2018 9:54 AM
I think that in North America, we eat more meat than other regions because meat is so readily available at a low price, so it is more financially feasible of an option than in other regions, so consumers choose it more often
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food composting
Producing uneaten food squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these motivates you the most to change your behavior regarding food waste?

    Malcolm Sales's avatar
    Malcolm Sales 4/24/2018 9:38 AM
For me, the reason that makes me want to change my behavior regarding food waste the most is the amount of water used to produce food that goes uneaten. SInce water is a resource that is only becoming more scarce, it is a shame that it would be used on food that isn't eaten
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Properly Dispose of Refrigerants
How do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?

    Malcolm Sales's avatar
    Malcolm Sales 4/24/2018 9:30 AM
To adress my despair about climate change, I try to engage in actions that are environmentally-friendly such as composting, recycling, using public transit, etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    Malcolm Sales's avatar
    Malcolm Sales 4/24/2018 9:23 AM
When walking, riding bicycles, or riding transit, you are more involved in the community you are travelling through than if you were driving
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Malcolm Sales's avatar
    Malcolm Sales 4/24/2018 9:18 AM
During my next meal prep, I can save the vegetable scraps for later, then cook them into a stock that can be used for cooking
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass techonology before this? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!

I had heard about biomass technology before, but I was surprised to learn that it is able to be used as a transitional fuel
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Malcolm Sales's avatar
    Malcolm Sales 4/16/2018 9:35 AM
I had never before heard of silvopasture, and after learning about it, I think that the biggest advantage of silvopasture is increased agricultural productivity, but it's great that there are also other advantages
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Use Public Transit
How has your access to various kinds of transporation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Malcolm Sales's avatar
    Malcolm Sales 4/12/2018 9:29 AM
Being from a major city, I grew up with easy access to public transport, so I've always been open to using public transportation such as bus, tram, and metro. I always try to use public transportation when it is available, as it is generally much easier and environmentally friendlier than the alternative.
