    Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    There are plenty of taller buildings with rooftop access where microturbines could be installed, particularly as we are right along the waterfront and get somewhat consistent wind from across Lake Erie.

    Knowing the difference between a listed expiration date and when a food item is actually unsafe to eat will help me waste less food, and regularly checking what's in the fridge and knowing what's there will help keep me more accountable to use what I have before I need to go grocery shopping again.

    Immediate steps I can take to save energy include updating insulation in my house, along with reglazing windows and updating weatherstripping to cut down on drafts. Having an older house gives me a lot of options for updating it's efficiency...

    I had heard of biomass technology before, but didn't necessarily know the term. I thought it was interesting that although it is considered a renewable energy source, it's really more of an intermediate step to reducing/eliminating a dependency on petroleum products. I do a lot of camping, so I want to look into getting a biomass "twig burner" stove to use instead of the more traditional stove that uses a propane or butane canister.

    Meat is relatively cheap in the US compared to many other countries and it seems to be ingrained into our culture that it is the easiest way to get protein. More awareness about plant-based sources of protein, along with benefits to companies who operate sustainably would help to push a decrease in this "dependence" on meat.

    After my first winter in a new house, I have a better idea of what areas need updating in regards to insulation and weatherization. Once the weather becomes a bit more cooperative, I have plans to redo weatherstripping on doors and glazing on a few windows. In the meantime I've been able to get away with plastic on the windows and comfy sweaters...

    I do my best to stick to a healthy diet, but I unfortunately don't always make the effort to choose products that are sustainably sourced. It does take slightly more effort to read through ingredient labels and know which products might be better or worse for the environment, but I plan to make a more focused effort on overall quality of my purchases. I'm also looking forward to getting out to farmer's markets and being able to find more locally-sourced options!

    An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    I just bought a house so I've been trying to keep myself more accountable in saving where I can. (All those home improvement projects aren't going to do themselves!) Meal planning is a good start to limiting the waste and it keeps me from buying extra food that I won't get to before it goes bad.

      Great tips on food waste Rachel! Chris Edmonds has been posting some good info as well. I also posted a picture of broth we recently made from veggie scraps. It was delicious!

    Keep a stash of veggie scraps in the freezer. When you have enough, they can be used to make broth.
