  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Restore Wetlands
How do wetlands differ from other ecosystems -- both in the services they offer and in your personal experience of them?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/23/2018 9:13 AM
I was able to do this by taking a class from SFCC about wetland ecology. It is beautiful and surprising, and I was surprised how much carbon they sequester!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Go Paperless
What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/23/2018 9:11 AM
I prioritize inspiring experiences and relationships with people over gaining stuff. Beautiful memories don't clutter up my house, and are so much more valuable!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Conduct Virtual Meetings
How can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/12/2018 12:59 PM
I don't have much control over how I conduct meetings, but I've had a few opportunities to have a phone conversation instead of using a car to meet somewhere, and that has gone really well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/10/2018 12:43 PM
I suspect that we couldn't have so many golf courses... and we would need to plan for growth according to rainfall, as we really don't have security from Colorado river water. Ithink it would look like lower population growth and more water efficient/rainwater fed buildings.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Materials Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/10/2018 12:10 PM
I'm helping water systems by avoiding anything that could pollute it in my life. I'm careful about what shampoos I use, and what I put down the drain. I also advocate for biodegradable glitter, because regular glitter becomes microplastic pollution.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/09/2018 3:02 PM
It's not just North America, any country that develops more wealth, one of the first things that happen is they buy more meat. This is consistent across value systems-- it's happening in China right now, even though they have a very different cultural system than N. America. How do we shift that? Make it obvious how delicious plant-based meals actually are!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/09/2018 2:59 PM
I had known about silvopasture, but not by that name. It's interesting to me how obvious some of these ideas are -- use one area of land for 2 purposes at the same time-- and how effective they are. If I had land for pasture, I would love for it to be more productive and be able to sell timber, rather than just watching it slowly dwindle in productivity under the intense sun...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. In what ways can you support your closest regenerative agriculture farm?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/09/2018 1:50 PM
I try to support regenerative ag by buying from the local farmer's market, but I could probably do more of that. Also, trying to let my own garden and landscape be a regenerative ag site (albeit small).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/05/2018 10:42 AM
I was really surprised how much potential wave energy has. Hundreds of megawatts can come from the pacific northwest near Oregon and Washington alone. I'm not certain about the storage of that, but I am interested to know that commercial installations are already under way. This is not just theoretical anymore!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Advocate for Solar Installation
How does advocating for this type of technology connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?

    Ashley Zappe's avatar
    Ashley Zappe 4/04/2018 8:14 AM
In addition to the usual reasons for solar (clean air, ghg emissions, etc) I strongly support thinking about the resources we use-- at this point, solar installations require that we think about how much electricity we really 'need.' Fortunately, I'm in a position with my 'day-job' that enables me to have many conversations about solar.
