    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than other countries, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

I think North America is stuck on being a meat culture, burgers and bbqs are "American".

Good resource for retrofitting incentives from the State of New Mexico.

I've been very busy, and it's  been hard to find time to check in. I'm just now starting to get my head above water, so I should be able to complete more actions and send proposals to the team.

Electricity Generation Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. What kind of investment seems most feasible for you?

I enjoyed reading about the geothermal ground source heat pump system on the EMNRD website. The system will pay itself off in ten years, and it saves them $3,500 per year on utility bills. If you're setting up a 30 year mortgage, that's a good deal.

I try to always use reusable bags at the store, but sometimes I forget to bring them in with me.  I purchased a reusable bag with its own stuff sack for $5 at the La Montanita Coop.  Stuffed it is about fist size and easily fits in my purse.  Now I will always have a bag handy!

I am intrigued by the idea of developing geothermal energy resources at the household level for heating and cooling.  According to the following article Geothermal Energy Pros and Cons by Mathias Aarre Maehlum  Last updated June 1, 2013 (http://energyinformative.org/geothermal-energy-pros-and-cons/)  ground round source heat pumps typically costs $3,000 – $10,000 and have a payback time of 10 – 20 years. I discovered that New Mexico has a tax credit to install a heat pump.

The New Mexico Geothermal Ground-Coupled Heat Pump Tax Credit will pay up to 30%, with a $9,000 maximum, of your geothermal ground-coupled heat pump system that is operational subsequent to January 1, 2010. This incentive is available for both personal and corporate income taxes for purchase and installation costs for these systems. In addition to this state tax credit, the federal government will pay 30% in a federal tax credit (Personal) or 10% (Corporate) for your geothermal ground-coupled heat pump system. New Mexico's incentive was passed by the legislature in 2009 to help citizens invest in clean energy for their homes or businesses.

I've always found geothermal heat pumps fascinating also. Any attempt to work with the environment to improve our dwellings whether it's passive solar or simply harvesting rainwater makes alot of sense to me. I'm sharing your link with the team now. Thanks for posting!

    Transport Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1 ton of CO2. Imagine a giant balloon with a diameter of 10 yards. If this balloon were filled with CO2, it would weigh about 1 ton. This flight would fill just about one of these balloons. What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

I am flying United and the carbon offset button is a bit hard to find on the bottom of your itinerary page. For round trip flight to Boston from San Francisco, the carbon offset was only $8.68, well worth the money considering how big of a footprint this leaves.

That's good to know, Kevin. May I ask the approximate cost of the flight? This would help with messaging:  Pay only around $9 on a _____ flight to offset your carbon footprint.

      Kevin Meehan 4/16/2018 12:14 PM
Hey Neal, the flight was $650 roundtrip. I believe the price of the offset has more to do with the # of miles flown and the plane utilized for the flight.

Electricity Generation Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Every dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. What are some companies you know of that invest in green energy, and how can you support them?

REI invests in both solar and wind energy.  I am a long time member of REI.  I just purchased a Hydro Flask stainless steel water bottle from REI.

Hmm, thanks Neal, I guess the water in pipes could be considered waves. That's exciting!

We can use our utility pipes too. Portland, OR is trying this with their water pipes.
