    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

We buy and cook only the food we will eat before it spoils. I reuse the wax bags that come in cereal boxes for food storage and lunch bags instead of buying plastic bags or special containers. I have a repurposed a dictionary for a plant stand in my office - thanks to Kelly M and I hope to build a planter box out of recycled materials for this summer.

Recycling Tip for Earth Day: We can recycle styrofoam and all #6 plastics just a few miles down the road at Agilyx, 7904 SW Hunzinker Road, Tigard. The small clear plastic cups typically are a #6.

I'm starting to plan my summer garden and hoping for lots of home grown organic veggies.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food composting
Producing uneaten food squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these motivates you the most to change your behavior regarding food waste?

I am motiviated by all the great things that result from matching food needs with food production: better use of land and energy, time more efficiently spent, and cost savings, too!

Join me in repurposing wax bags, such as the ones that come in cereal boxes and cracker boxes. They are a great way to bring your lunch, instead of using plastic bags or buying a special container. They also are great for storing things in the fridge. Repurpose, recycle, reduce!

Trash for Peace is a really great organization, started by a local woman. She worked in Guatemala and, while there, figured out a way to build a school house out of the plastic bottles and bags that were scattered throughout the streets. That work continues, as does educational work in the US. Her organization is called Trash for Peace. They educate children about reusing materials in creative ways. I'm looking forward to more sun and being able to save some electricity by hanging laundry outside to dry!
