REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Buy BambooAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Patricia Hine 4/24/2018 3:51 PMSome clothing items are available, even locally made. Yay! Also like to buy hemp clothing from local makers. We grow bamboo for our garden needs for stakes and bean ladders. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Rooftop Solar ConsultationIdentify some ways in which modern human societies have become unsustainable. What kind of roles do individuals have in creating and changing practices in society?
Patricia Hine 4/24/2018 3:49 PMOverpopulation - we forgot "there are limits" and limits are okay, even good. It's unsustainable to be in a petri-dish with 7 billion others, right before the last cell division... Individuals absolutely can step up to make needed changes now. Run for office, speak to officials, write a law, policy, white paper, op ed... start a group, start a discipline practice, learn more... build resiliency. Time to be brave and show up in new ways! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Choose Better Wood ProductsBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Patricia Hine 4/24/2018 3:45 PMJust learned about Forest Stewardship seal of approval category for wood products! Very good. Will be paying more attention to that in the store and in conversations with people. The forest offers a sacred place to return mind and body to balance. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 2How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Patricia Hine 4/24/2018 3:43 PMEasy to get rid of palm oil. But hard to find local oils. Hazel nut oil? -
Patricia Hine 4/24/2018 3:21 PMHit and miss, but really like the idea of coming and going with the challenge when time permits... -
Patricia Hine 4/17/2018 7:33 PMFeeling competitive with the group we're in a contest with! Go, Team! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Eliminate Toxic PlasticsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Patricia Hine 4/17/2018 7:31 PMWe use plastic containers for sour cream and yogurt. We found recently a glass jar with Bulgarian yogurt that we've switched to (at Capella's), but we need to bug the store we buy sour cream from to source that product in glass containers. Will fill out a customer service questionnaire to request glass containers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of this?

REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Patricia Hine 4/09/2018 6:14 PMNot buy foods grown using pesticides that get into the watersheds. We conserve water like crazy, catch over 10,000 gallons of rain water to use in irrigating food crops. Keeps from depleting the aquifer in our area. Don't eat seafood anymore.-
Terry Parker 4/11/2018 1:57 PMComing from an Oregon commercial fishing family I was really excited when I found out about the Port Orford Sustainable Seafood (and Eugene is one of their delivery stops):
The Community Supported Fishery (CSF) was adapted from the Community Supported Agriculture model (CSA). Like them, CSF’s connect directly with consumers who care about how and where their food is sourced. Members of our CSF pre-pay for local, line-caught seafood. CSF members are closer to the communities that catch and process their local seafood. It encourages sustainable fishing practices, and it strengthens relationships between fishermen and consumers.

Karen Austin 4/09/2018 11:58 PMI'd like to know more about how you catch and save water then use it to irrigate your crops.
